When I reboot my commando, I gotta reselect my keyboard, and I also have a hard time getting the device to switch to Swype from the stock. Am I the only one with the issue?

I've noticed the same thing. I tried installing the ICS keyboard. Although I selected it, the default keyboard is the only one that appears, even after restarting the phone. Today, I installed the TouchPal app - another swipe style keyboard - made sure it was selected under keyboards but it doesn't appear when I start typing, even after restarting the phone.
Suggestions?

After you install it and enable it in settings you then have to open a typing window, like in messaging. Long press in the typing window and you should get a popup that asks you to select input method. This is where you then select the new keyboard you want to use. Its a three step process that is much more complicated than it needs to be.

So true. I fiddled around with it some more. I took a chance and used Titanium Backup to freeze the XT9 app. Once that was frozen I reselected TouchPal as the default, restarted the phone and all is well. TouchPal seems to have fewer "alternate" characters available compared to XT9 but it doesn't matter as I never use them anyway. It's great having !, ?, . & ; all on the same keyboard. Both Voice and Swipe work well on it, too.
Thanks again for your suggestion.
