Is there a way to make the volume levels finer? The levels by default seem very far apart; go up one and it's too loud, go one down, and it's too quiet. This is when using earphones.

The headphone option is the only thing requiring root.
The only place I see a big jump in volume settings is on speaker phone. When I ring someone its usually too loud due to Volume+ so when I bump it down one notch it seems like too big a jump but not a deal breaker. The real adjustment comes when they answer, its usually a different ball game then and I get it to where I want it no prob.

Try some of the free equalizer apps. I'm using one and I had to turn it down because it was to loud. Work perfectly
