Is there a major difference between DroidRootHelper and DroidRootPro? Thinking about the Pro to support the dev, but wondering what's extra in it?
Also, where would I find the update.zip file for BB? Have been debating which route I want to go with this--the only data on the phone is the contacts and the apps, both of which should be fairly easy to recover.
Finally, I'm assuming BB has a better home screen setup? I'm currently using OpenHome, but not sure if the need would be there for it with BB....
Thanks to all for the help--it's done, and so far I like BB 0.7.5. What was added in the 0.8 series, or is that the group of 2.1 ROMs??

once i try this, how hard is it to go back to "stock" if i dont like it?
Alright. I went back and started the process from Get the Tools on down. Eventually I got it. Thanks guys! Im in love with my Droid all over again!Sounds like your SBRecovery (99.2b recovery) was not installed properly or fully. You might try doing that step again...

I'm a noob and have no idea what root means or any of the other terms being used throughout the forums. After reading this guide though I now understand why you would want to modify your phone... to make it much faster, I want this just as bad as any other person. So thank you Kirch, I'm going to go home and try this with a brand new understading of what I will be doing. I almost used the Smupdater from the market too.

This was a really nice and easy-to-follow guide, thank you so much. I haven't found a guide that outlines everything for me yet, and then I came across yours and decided to go for it. Thanks again!
If I may suggest an addition: The most annoying part for me was getting the tools into DroidRootHelper. It might be easier to provide a download link for the tools folder so users can just download it on their PCs and then copy it over via USB to the SD card. Just a suggestion.
glad i could help thoughI am in process of doing this, but I've run into a problem. I have a question: once you flash nandroid recovery, how long does that last? Should that replace the stock recovery system permanently?
The first time I go through the process of flashing nandroid and do the "recovery reboot" it works perfectly (loads into the nandroid recovery). However, if I reboot, turn the phone off, and load the recovery menu (by holding X), it loads the stock recovery menu. I'm a bit leery of doing this because, if anything goes wrong and I don't have the nandroid recovery menu, I don't know if I'll be able to flash a good version back onto the phone.
Sorry for the noob questions, but I just want to make sure I'm doing everything right before I potentially ruin my phone.
Thank you for the guide!
Wow this is weird normally it would permanently replace the recovery. What happens if you hit "reboot recovery" in droidroothelper?
If I don't follow your steps (doing the chmod and such, the original steps you put forth), hitting "reboot recovery" within droidroothelper boots into the regular recovery menu. The only way I can get nandroid recovery to come up is if I go through all the steps each time. Would I be well advised to not do any ROM flashing without the ability to use nandroid at will?
Honestly i wouldnt for now, but i PROMISE you if you follow this guide step by step your will have the correct recovery flashed. did you use this guide?
This is just so weird how you somehow have both recoverys all i can think of is to start over and make sure you have everything right. "Tools" on the root of your sd and little things like that. Good luck let me know if you have more questions
Yeah I followed your guide to the word. I'm going to find out how to unroot, and then start everything over.
Thank you for your hbelp and for the awesome guide!
I don't have my phone on me, but there's one extra button you need to press in DroidRootHelper to make SPRecovery permanent. After you flash the recovery and before you reboot the phone (it's important you do it within that time frame), there's a button that says something along the lines of renaming some boot thing... it's not grouped with any other buttons and it's just there randomly, and I think it's the only button with the word rename on it. You'll know it when you see it. Press that button. It'll prevent the phone from flashing the stock recovery over SPRecovery during every reboot cause you'll have moved the stock recovery's file.
This! I should have thought of this. You didnt hit rename recovery you need to install the recovery the rename it in droidroothelper like shadowdude said
