Texts "slow" when screen is sleeping

I've been noticing that many of my texts aren't "hitting" the phone or notifying until I bring the screen out of sleep mode.

For example...my screen is dark, phone locked, and I'm expecting a text. I go to take a look, hit the power button to bring up the lock screen and "bing"...the text notifies.

Has anyone else experienced this? I'm using Handcent.

Thanks!

I personally have not seen it using the stock app. I have noticed that sometimes my notifications for WWF will be slow when the phone is asleep though.

Not happening to me using stock app. Not happening with Google+ either (as soon as my wife hits me with a tag, my phone beeps, even in sleep mode--within a second of her hitting the button). This could be something Handcent is doing. Try posting this in the app's forum.

The power saving modes have an effect on when the device is receptive to data notifications. In particular I think you want to enable Mobile Network on the main notification pulldown under Quick Settings.

As a general FYI, shutting down unneeded services is a useful way to conserve battery power, but it obviously conflicts with the desire to take advantage of those services!

Nailed it..

I dumped Handcent and am trying Go SMS Pro to see if there is any difference. I've also made sure I'm in high performance mode too. Will post results after letting it ride for a day.

Thanks for the responses!
