Yet another "my signal experiences" thread....

Got my GNex yesterday afternoon. Used it at work, while out and about and at home.

At all times I had at least 1 bar in 4G signal. Always blue, so always in sync with Google servers. Even with just the 1 bar the connection was rock solid and fast.

Today, same thing....until I walked into the school gym at my kids school. Lost all 4G bars, but the phone handled the cutover to 3G fairly well.

What seems to have thrown it for a loop, however, was when I made an outgoing call. The call went through fine, quality was good, but once I hung up I lost data connectivity. Im not sure if I was still stuck on 1x (the bars turned into more of a smooth half pyramid shape thing), but data related apps would say there was no connection. I walked outside the building to see if it would pick up a connection but it didnt (at least not in the minute or two I was waiting). Put the phone in airplane mode and then back out of airplane mode, and got my 3G signal back (while standing INSIDE the building). So I think this lends a lot of truth to it being an issue with 3G/4G/1x/etc switching. If the radio was truly that weak, I dont think I should have been able to grab a 3G signal again while inside the building.

Once on 3G inside, within 30 seconds of leaving the building the phone gracefully switched over to 4G and has been there since.

Incidentally enough I was standing next to my friend with his Bionic, and his dropped down to 3G at the same time as mine (but his 3G bars went white....so technically no Google sync). He didnt make a call, however, to see if his acted the same as mine (i.e. not coming back after the call)

Sometimes, getting authenticated and back on 4G takes some time, when even a weak signal is almost avail. SGN is the best of all the 4G phones that I've had.

I have a bionic here, and after voice calls, it may have taken forever to get back on the data network for some reason.

So if the radio can barely talk 4G, but not reliably, it can/may take some time. 4G is not as building friendly as 3G though. I hope that VZW can improve this, but they have the most experience with it. ATT's LTE network just expanded and people are reporting worse/similar issues already.

A bunch of us reported much better LTE signal yesterday afternoon, maybe VZW is testing.... maybe not, I hate getting my hopes up, lol.

What I noticed is that Nexus can switch down to 3G pretty quick, but sometimes it's slow to reconnect to 4G when I get out of weak area. But I never lost data signal totally in my regular living, working areas. It only happened on mountain far from metro area where signal is very weak.

I really hope when they push an update to addess the signal issue that it doesn't give signal issues to those of us who don't have them now.

I did find a bug with flipping back to 4G.

If you have a 3G data stream going, and drive into a 4G area, it will NOT flip to 4G until you stop the data.... ie streaming music.

Of course I reported this to VZW after THX weekend, but they were clueless about it. I could then recreate it every single weekend since I have to drive out of town where the GGGG's are! This was on a Charge, and the SGN did the same thing.

I usually stream music and on the return trip, I'm 3G, and enter a 4G area. It's never flipped back for a few times... so I wised up when I knew I was in a good 4G area and driving. Paused the streaming music, flipped airplane mode, and it came back with 4G. yay!

I noticed that my OG Droid did the same thing from 1X to 3G. I assumed all phones did this (wouldn't switch data services while constantly transferring data). It is rather annoying when you're utilizing any sort of music streaming service.

Yeah my Fascinate does the same. Send a text or make a call and it will even stay on 1x until the next time you do something that calls for data (email, etc). Luckily the Fascinate seemed to handle the switchovers perfectly fine.

I think its just a matter of tweaking the portion of the kernel that handles the switchovers. Also remember we are still on 4.0.X, whereas Eclair and GB were much more mature before making it to those phones. Honestly, looking at where ICS already is, it almost seems like its destined to be a WHOLE lot better and more stable than Eclair or GB ever were.

My only question is why do we have to have "yet another" signal experience thread. Isn't the one suffecient enough?

Just asking . . . . .I'm not trying to flame but this section grows by almost 200 threads a day, and probably that could be trimmed considerably if the other threads were just replied to. But just my opinion . . .
