simultaneous data and voice

Hi all, first time post for this newb SGN owner (not rooted, 4.0.2). I've had the SGN since 15 Dec. It's also my first smart phone, so I'm easily impressed, but I also have some gripes. My first question though is can I talk (phone conversation) and surf simultaneously? I'm in a 3G area (no 4G). Thought I could, but today - no luck, could do one or the other, but not both. I know it seems ridiculous, but I like to talk to my elderly father about news, sports, what's on tv, etc..and it's very convenient to look that stuff up while I'm chatting with him.

thanks in advance,

PS never had a reboot yet.
PSS all volume is good (loud enough) except default command voice over blue tooth ear piece (barely audible, but conversation is loud and clear)
PSS Camera is workable, but honestly, I think it sucks based on what I think a phone of this caliber should have. (yes I'm fairly experienced as a photog, so I'm not a numb-skull when it comes to photography).
PSSS Extended battery that I got on the first day for 25 bucks seems to be good enough for me.
PSSS 3G is not as available as I'd like, perhaps a Verizon issue - so hard to tell..many posts on this aspect.

...can I talk (phone conversation) and surf simultaneously? I'm in a 3G area (no 4G).

The easy answer is no, there is no simultaneous voice and data over a 3G only connection. However it may work if you have a wifi connection. I'm not sure on that; you'll have to check yourself.

Welcome to AF you have come to a great place for Android info :)

I believe that the only way dual data and voice will work is if your on a 4G network or if your on a 3G network and also logged into a WiFi connection.

I also agree that the camera needs some work. Hopefully future software updates will fix that.

If you don't mind would it be okay if i move this thread to the Verizon Specific Galaxy Nexus Sub Forum?

simultaneous voice and data does work over 4G LTE (I know you said you aren't in a coverage area)... my understanding is that 3G 4G and WiFi all use different radios, and voice uses the same radio as 3G, so no simultaneous voice/data on 3G, however you can do simultaneous voice/sms/mms.

when on 4G, voice still uses 3G radio and data only uses 4G radio.

great and fast replies thanks. I know I had accomplished the simultaneous voice and data over the holidays (while traveling)...but I must have been 4G at the time! It also does work while wifi/3G. So now I know - thanks again.

also, you can move the thread wherever is appropriate :)

But I think only the thunderbolt uses two radios currently

Correct on that point. Thunderbolt is the only model that will let you do voice/data over 3G. It's not ideal, of course, your data speed will suffer while on a call, but it is possible.

As stated, the rest of the phones can do it if you're either in an LTE market, or if you're on wifi for the data side. As a side note: while you can do data on WiFi for browsing, etc... you still won't be able to send/receive picture/MMS messages while in a call, if you're on WiFi. That still requires cellular network data to send/rec, so you'll have to wait on those until after the call.
