What is the modem used for in the phone?

Before I go ahead and unroot to 2.3.4 and then root and install UnNamed rom, what is the "modem" used for.
I see people talking about after installing custom roms or rooting a phone they are having "modem xxxxxx not found" issues.
Do I need to worry about it?

Your modem is your radio. It's what sends and receives cell data.

SO then why do I see files out there for specific modems and such? Shouldn't it be a non-issue when rooting and putting a new rom on?

there is a map there which shows what people in your area use as their modems and if they work well or not. you usually dont need to change one, its just if the one included in the rom does not work well in your area

OK so I think I got it. You can try these to see which is optimum in your area or try them if you are having issues with the ones in the rom you flashed with. Sound about correct?

Still looking into whether or not I should go about rooting or not. ICS is just around the corner.

Right. Usually, however, if you got your phone locally, it probably already has the most geographically compatible modem for your area.
