[Verizon] How to choose Kernels, ROMs, etc

Hello everyone,
I have been reading so much about rooting, and flashing ROMs, well all things rooted, and I can't figure out how everyone chooses which Kernels they want, and its getting a little frustrating. Is there a single place I can go to that will show me all the available kernels for the GNEX. There are so many out there already and I want to choose the "best", right one for me. especially because it will be my first time rooting. I was just wondering how you all compare and contrast various kernels.

I compare and contrast them by using them for a couple of days and see how they perform and how gentle they are on the battery. I think a good way to judge is by the user base for that particular ROM or kernel. That's not to say something new and untested would be bad in any way.

When I first started rooting I asked the exact same question to myself and to the forum. I got a similar response that I'm giving you now, because I think it is the best advice. Shop till you drop, research the features you want, narrow it down, then drop in and ask everyone here what they think about it. Then go for it!

Having said that here is my personal take on it. For a "first time rooter" mike1986's ARHD ROM is about as good as it gets. I think it's a great way to get your feet wet. It is similar to stock with some much needed tweaks, super smooth and super stable, good battery life, and great support. You can find it here

I agree that the best way to find out what ROM is good, is to try them. I often read comments about the ROMs to see if people are generally happy, or have lots of problems. Also, you kind of start to get a feel for the type of ROMs some of the developers produce if you hang around for a while.

For instance, Fabolous also did ROMs for the DroidX, that I owned, and I happen to know that his ROMs are generally fast, stable, and not that far off from the stock Google "experience." So now that he's doing ROMs for the Galaxy Nexus, I expect that he's following the same guidelines.

I have been EXTREMELY happy with LeanKernel, no matter what ROM I'm running. Completely stable, and it increased my battery life by at least 50% if not more.
