To Root or not to Root??

bobster71

Newbie
Hi guys, im a newbie here, got my galaxy just a week ago and im loving it, i really want to root my fone but im really scared of doing it, i haven't done any rooting or tinkering with any fone before so im a bit hesitant, so what do you think guys should i do it or not? can you give me the pro's and con's of rooting? is the pro's really out weight the con's?

i think there's a lot of benefits when you root your phone and in one word i can describe it as "MAXIMIZE". yeah i guess when you root it you can do a lot of things compared to an unroot phone, its gives you the permission to modify its system which are restricted in an unroot phone. basta pre mas ok ang mag root hehehe

and about its negative effect, hmmmmm hmmmmm the only thing i can think of is the voidance of its warranty if it is still under its warranty period, i think thats all

rooting... the focal point of what im supposed to be doing with my phone ====>> "reverse tethering".

since i now know how to install offline apps or .apk files, there's no need to do that. since im very happy of what my phone can do, there's no need to push my phone to the limit.

a phone is just a phone. imho, it can never compare with my experience with my pc in terms of gaming or browsing.

as i have read through the forums, rooting cant void the warranty, but when your phone gets screwed on what ever reason and its rooted, well the warranty's void.

of course, you can always unroot it(by flashing) before going to the service center. but what if you cant?

thanks for the reply guys, this is my dilemma, actually i bought this phone because on what i saw on youttube about playing HD games on the galaxy y, but of course you have to root it and install chainfire 3d, that is my main purpose, but the fact that ive already got the phone, im having cold feet about rooting it, i mean 6k pesos is not that cheap, and i dont want to brick my phone, but then again thats the purpose why i bought this phone to play HD games......aarrrggghhhh hehehe:)

@spliffy - that "reverse tethering" thingy, do you have a TUT on that, is that the thing when you can browse to your galaxy by using your PC??

i think there no possibility of bricking your phone when you root your phone so as long as your installing the correct update.zip for your galaxy y or if there is a possibility of bricking it, it'll be only 1 percent. i have rooted mine for about 30 seconds and thats it.

thanks for the assurance bro, one last question, if i root my phone, can i transfer some of my application from phone memory to my SD card? my phone memory is getting a little crowded, i have about 40mb left on my phone memory

yeah you can, try link2sd but dont move widgets and live wallpaper to your memory card, if you move those they might not function properly

i havent tried this yet since i already decided not to root my phone. but tell me if it works

i would love to try playing hd games sometime but not these days, thank you. maybe the so-called "wiping batt stat" will change my mind.

btw, as ive read through the forums about sd problems, most of the users from their previous posts(posted from other threads) said they rooted their phones. it may be connected with accidentally doing something that is not supposed to be done in the root. who knows...

i might root my phone someday when i get bored with it. but for now, im totally satisfied, dont have any anxieties about breaking my phone coz warranty is still intact, and happy with it like it can do what a phone can do.

EDIT:
a piece of advice to all who want to root their phones:
you should know what to do next after rooting. give your phone a purpose like "hd games" or "reverse tethering" not just rooting because everyone does it.. :)

guys i have done it! and so far so good, no problems so far, the good thing about it is that ive transfered my apps (mostly games) to sd card so it freed my phone memory, ive got around 40 games/apps on my phone and my phone memory still got around 120 mb:)

warranty gets cancelled if i root my fone?

rooting is something like modifying the item they sold you. meaning, you made some alterations to the original concept of operation that the manufacturer did.

if your phone gets broken for whatever other reason and they found out you rooted your phone. then warranty is void. this is the reason why im still skeptic about it. my previous samsung phone gave me a pain in its defective earphone slot in its 1st month. im expecting some problems on this phone also. :) so why risk it if i dont need it.

You're absolutely right bro, if you don't need to play HD games and just want a regular phone that can call and make sms, then don't root your phone, why bother risking your warranty if you just want a regular phone:)

hey guys. im from Philippines.. just bought Galaxy Y this January.. got the latest version of android and gingerbread.. 2.3.6 XXKL.. i want to know if can i still update my firmware if kies detected a latest firmware for Galaxy Y while my device is rooted :)) i've been thinking if i'll root it or not right now . tnx

@franzelle02

Rooted my phone after i got it last November 3 2011 at smart MOA. Updated it using kies last January 5 2012. Works fine. Root as long as you know how. If not , then don't.

i will root my phone, but not this time, maybe in a few months. im still not bored with my GY and am still observing factory defects.

this will be my last option if the battery life wont improve on the official firmwares. or maybe ill try out a new rom or something.

@spine and boobster: that's exactly what i have in mind.

Dont worry guys!! However you can un-root your phone to get back your warranty!!

TO Root Galaxy Y Gaming Club: Rooting

TO Un-Root Galaxy Y Gaming Club: Un-Rooting

There are many advantages for rooting your droid , and main is that you can play HD games using Chainfire 3D!!!!

However you can un-root your phone to get back your warranty, I am saying this again!!!:D

What are the other advantages of rooting apart from Playing HD games and moving unmovable items to SD card?

i've rooted my phone last day.. and installed supercharger, juice defender ultimate, cpu tuner.. and that makes my phone SNAPPY xD been playing every games without lag.

well that's good... but what about the kies problem your talking about? have you encountered it after rooting?
http://androidforums.com/samsung-galaxy-y/491623-no-firmware-update-kies-help.html

i managed to fix the problem :) i got the latest firmware bandbaseversion S5360DXLA1. i flash my device to change it to asian firmware for philippines. which is DX, then i just firmware update it via FOTA. problem solved for me :D i re-root my phone, and supercharged it. very snappy again :)
