Help prevail help-rom flashing

PREVAILer

Newbie
i just bought a prevail 2 days ago. got it activated through boost of course. i rooted it. now i want to install a custom rom. i downloaded rom manager and read on a thread that it was no good for prevail so i deleted it instantly. i also read on a thread that a.c.s. updater was approved for prevail.? well anyway i went to back it up and it told me my sd card was unmounted when clearly it was mounted. so i looked and found a thread that described using cwm5 and it was fixed as of 1/12/12. i cant post the thread title cause of the filter but i followed all direction there and i still get the same thing in a.c.s. updater. short story a.c.s. updater downloaded. sd card unmounted. downloaded odin and installed cwm5. same problem with it stating that my sd card is unmounted when it clearly isnt. ive searched over 4 hours tryin to find a solution. so please help.

to flash a new ROM,
1.download the ROM (and any hotfixes that come with it, it may not have any) onto your sd card (or to pc, and then transfer to your sd card)
2.boot into cwm and select install zip from sd card (using volume buttons to navigate the menu and the camera or home key to select the option)
3. select choose zip from sd card
4.locate the rom you wish to install and select it
5. select 'yes'
6.repeat for any hotfixes
7.when it finishes, (using the back key) return to the main menu and go into advanced
8. select 'wipe dalvik cache'
9.select yes
10.back up to main menu and select reboot system now
NOTE:it can take upto 5 min for the ROM to load the first time while it builds the needed files.

the only exception(s) to this are Excel Prevail and Alien Android Rom. the have different instructions detailed in their respective threads.

MAKE SURE YOU READ ALL THE INSTRUCTIONS FOR EACH ROM'S INSTALATION. IT MAY SEEM OVERWHELMING, BUT ONCE YOU GET THE HANG OF IT, IT IS REALLY QUITE SIMPLE.
ATM the only thing asc updater is good for is giving you the ability to name your backups (if you make a backup and then rename it, it will give you a md5 sum mismatch.)
also in cwm try going into mounts and storage. if it says "mount sd card" or something like that then it ISNT mounted (tho i have never had a problem with it). The option you select is what you would like to accomplish. (i.e. selecting 'unmount cache' will change the display to say 'mount cache' this means that you have unmounted that partition and have the option to select 'mount cache' to again mount that partiton.

that was the first place i went was my settings and it said that it was mounted. but when i try to backup my files is when it says that it says its unmounted. i just want to back it up so that if any problems occur i can just revert back to this stage. id feel more comfortable with backing up first.

Edit* i am close to kalamazoo, mi. how ironic.

when you say it is mounted, the screen displays 'unmount sd' correct? (just being thorough)

this http://androidforums.com/galaxy-prevail-all-things-root/429867-odin-image-file-creator.html is another option as far as a backup goes, it creates an Odin flashable image of your current rom and settings. but if your sd card truly wont/isnt mounted, it probably will not be much help to you, as it temporarily stores the files it created on the card before extraction them to pc. have you tried another sd card? could it be that the one you are using is junk? (you could also format the card to see if that helps. BUT THAT WILL DELETE THE CONTENTS OF YOUR SD CARD. you can just move your files from sd card to pc before attempting to format, and then back after.)

well i will try the odin thing first but i have downloaded music off my phone and its automatically stored on my sd. but its a brand new sd i just bought the phone 2 days ago. but im willing to try anything before i toast my phone.

make sure you have a good amount of space on your card before using the odin image creater, (i try to keep atleast 500MB free. it wont use all of that, but at one time i didnt have enough room, so it made incomplete files, and when i tried to use the restore it was useless)

ALSO, silly question but did you try removing/reinserting the card? and if you plug into the pc, and select mass storage, does it open and allow you to modify the contents of the sd card?

yes i still have well over a 1gb cause it came with a 2gb card. but i did the odin backup and while it did it it said error device not found but it did a bunch of stuff and in the end it said that it was successful. so im gonna check and see if it worked. also can you tell me the best places to go to download custom roms for my prevail. all this is greatly appreciated.

lol ya and now im downloading ctmod 2.4 its the only rom i guess for prevail thats *official*? but its my first so good luck to myself. thanks for the help.

no problem. and roms are like this:
CTMod= based off stock gingerbread, stripped to the bare minimum components, with many added performance tweaks
HoneyBread Sandwhich= based off CTMod, themed and additional tweaks added.
CM7= CyanogenMod7 'official' code tweaked to work with the prevails hardware. still in beta, but very close to a stable build. minimal issues, maximum themability.
Excel Prevail and Alien Android Rom=bassed HIGHLY off cm7, themed
Nemisis= based off CTMod, stripped down EVEN MORE

i like super cutomization, so cm7 is my cup of tea. i like the ability to change all of my icons and stuff with the push of a button. but it is not 100% stable... (more like 99.6% lol) so if you need EVERYTHING to work all the time like stock, i would maybe wait a bit. if you want a much-faster-close-to-stock ROM, CT or its off-chutes are the way to go. but you really will not know if what is right for you until you try them all. :D

you chose a great place to start, CT is a smooth transition from stock to custom, but as you get more comfortable with your phone (and modding/trouble shooting) you might want to try CM7.
i know once i felt the power of CyanogenMod, there was no turning back for me, but im a tinkerer, and what is good for my needs might be terrible for the needs of others. so just read the pros and cons of each and decided for yourself.

side note: read read read, CT has removed a lot of the stock features/apps that the phone comes with, but bloodwan was nice enough to include a cwm flashable zip containing all of those removed apps in his OP, so if there is something that used to work and no longer does, that zip is the reason and the remedy.

alright. lots of good info you havin givin me. one last question, since i dont have any other sd cards right now, do i have to revert back to stock rom before i try to put another rom on there?

lol, nope. you can put as many roms on your sd card as you like. the downloads are only the installer. the rom does not run from the sd card. the installer places the files on the phones memory, replacing the previous rom's files. you can even remove the installer from your sd and store it on your pc (or or even delete it) to save room if you like. the same is true of backups. backup often, keep old ones on your pc. never know how far you might need to go back to resolve an issue. i personally backup once a week and before i change anything that might potentially screw up my phone/have undesired side effects. and i have atleast 5 backups at any given time (not including my personal version of 'stock' <CM7, with a few well known tweaks, and slimmed down a little to make modding new prevails super effeciant> in an odin flashable form)

And at the most you need to do a factory reset before flashing a new rom. most even do that for you during the installation process. so reverting to stock is TOTALLY unnecessary
