I downloaded a program called Network Firewall by King KONG Long. But it says Root can not get permission. I'm not very familiar with android as I just got the phone on the 27th. What is rooting? Is that similar to jail breaking on iphone? And rooting voids warentee right? If not do all firewalls requiring rooting? Or do any not require it?

well to be honest you don't need a firewall for android it just sucks up battery and memory. Rooting is pretty much the same as jailbreaking. It does void your warranty, but you can download the stock rom I made if anything happens to your phone to get back the warrenty.

I need a firewall. No other program like that does what what it does without rooting. I only have 10mb of data so I need a firewall to block everything from using all my data. Cuz apparently I have already used 0.3mb of data even though I'm on the wifi (we have att uverse). According My Data Manager Free edition facebook used 0.1mb of data on data and 3.5mb on wifi. So its not wifi for sure since its separating the two and monitoring both. It's has to be data. But I'm on wifi so 3.5mb is acceptable and not bad. But I'm on wifi so its unlimited anyway and doesn't matter. But on data 0.1mb was used. Not acceptable. If I'm on wifi so nothing should be used not even 0.1mb. So sometihng is definitely wrong.

So having a firewall will guarantee all data gets blocked except like mail for example.

Even with wifi turned on all the time, your MB are still being used. When your phone wakes up from sitting there wifi takes a min to kick back on. There for it uses your MB. These phones are online 24/7. It is almost impossible to do anything without something loading in the background. Maybe try to disable your data. There are plenty of apps out there. That way when your phone wakes up your network is disabled so when wifi kicks back on your back online.

But if that is true then why when I had no data originally (before I got the data) only wifi was being used. I mean at&t go smart phone requires data plan and can not use 1 cent per 5kb. So there were no charges. Never got my minutes used. Stayed at 15 dollars and never got deducted for data. So why does adding data all of a sudden make a difference. I don't get it.

Data Enabler Widget (link) to switch data on/off when you want to.

That is what I use. My wife used 5mb of data the first day at work (first time leaving the home wifi with her phone for extended period of time.) I put the link above on both of our phones. She hasn't used a single bit of data since and can turn it on if she needs to use data for something.

I just leave my data on because I'm on wifi at work as well. I only used 10mb the first month most from leaving work's wifi area while updating something. You do have to watch though even being on wifi because I was downloading a 25mb app and the wifi signal must have been weak and it switched from wifi to data.

Also, make sure other things in the settings are set correctly if you don't want to be using a lot of data. You can set so programs only sync on wifi or update on wifi. I estimate my data using less than 2mb/month if I don't specifically use it because I have the network locating turned on for my weather widget to give me current location weather.

In case you don't know, as long as you keep it active each month with the minimum data package, the unused data (and texts) roll over. I initially put the $25 500mb data on my phone and just renewed for the 2nd month with the $5 10mb data. I expect this to last me at least 6 months, probably more 8-10 months, before I put an additional 500mb on.

Using 100mb per month and adding 500mb on every 5 months, would cost around $120 for the year. That's around the entire cost of a contracted smartphone for a single month, LOL. I LOVE prepaid! :D Especially since I don't expect to come anywhere close to using 100mb per month because I don't live my life with my face constantly behind a cell phone like the majority of society seems to.
