How many of you R&R your SIM card?

When I attempted to do the *228 update I got the message that my 4G phone uses a SIM card.

I called customer service and they told me that the SIM card handles programming and roaming updates. They told me when I was in a bad area to remove my battery and SIM card and replace them. I did that and my phone became a paperweight.

When I did it with a second phone and it also became a paperweight I called tech support and they told me that if you are in an area that has poor service the phone tries to reset everything to the signal it sees and if it doesn't see a signal, it has nothing to reset to.....thus the paperweight.

I live in a low service area, and it seems like the phone handles all of this on its own with out a reset. Sometimes I jump to 1X, and my signal improves greatly. So I just let the phone do it's own thing.

That really seams strange. I know that with CDMA devices the *228 is a savior many times when out of your typical service area or your having any other type of network related issues. It serves as a soft-reset for all intents and purposes really.

However, like tech support said, the SIM card should have handled this much better than it did. The GSM standard your phone operates on is the whole point. You should not even have to worry about roaming, signal loss in various "bad" areas, etc... but to remove the SIM card and replace it? That does not make sense.. it's not a battery-removing a battery (power) and a chip (read/write info) are two different things when you get down to the real meat of the subject. I guess my point is, I don't know why they told you to remove and replace the SIM, it does not make sense. Battery? Sure, SIM - no.

How do you go about jumping to 1X?

the phone does it automatically when there is not 3g/4g coverage available

What the VZW rep should have told you is never do *228 on a 4G device. You risk frying the SIM card and having to get a new one. Powering down the phone and turning it back on will update any PRL list if there is one.

Why is that? I have never heard that before and there has to be a logical reason for that to be the case.
