Yes it can, and simply follow this process, make sure you do not take any OTA updates, or you will loose that HBoot and rooting will be more complicated.

I am having trouble installing the HTCDriver3.0.0.007 on my 32-bit window xp PC. I click Run and nothing happens. When I conntect my phone to the PC before it is reconized. Do I need the Driver?

And, for the love of all things rooting, never ever take an OTA. You'll lose your precious HBOOT 1.3 :p

Ok I ran into a problem. I tried to flash a couple of different ROMs and both keep getting stuck boot screen. I have been searching around and will try to redowload and try again. If any suggestions they are welcome. Thanks!

Ok, I have it working. Just had to do factory reset. User the Synergy ROM and it's awesome. I didn't know the phone was that fast!

Ah yes, some ROMs require you delete the /data partition (sometimes called factory reset). Not always required, but Synergy is one. I'd suggest you invest in a backup app like Titanium Backup or Mybackup Pro. It makes restoring your phone from a data wipe relatively easy.

Thanks jerofld! I have titanium backup and I can see it's usefulness.
