Root A Newbie's Best Friend: Rooting and Flashing Step by Step Guide

Can I get a link to the clockwork recovery being used in this tutorial. I used this one. It doesn't seem to be working; when I run the cwm_windows_install.bat as admin is says something like adp not recognized over and over. My phone never rebooted and quickboot doesn't seem to work (probably cause root didn't work.

How to Flash A Custom ROM-

1- Once downloaded, its recommended to download it from your computer and place it on your phone, put it on the root of your internal or external sd cards. Root meaning not in a folder.

Can someone show me how to place the ROM in my SD card?

Using your computer? I usually just download it to the phone..puts it on internal sd...then I use root explorer to move it to external sd..in a folder created (Roms & Themes).
Makes it easier to find for me:D

LOL
Download the zip file to your computer(don't unzip it save it)
Locate the file in your downloads folder on the computer.
Plug your phone into computer and when asked on your phone select connet as Mass Storage.
Your phone will show 2 drive(Internal and SD Card)
Place(Cut/Paste) the zip file for the ROM you just downloaded into the SD Card.

Now when you boot into recovery you should have the option to select that file when you choose "install from zip"

Remember to per the instruction:
3- Using your volume keys to scroll and your power key to select, scroll down tand select "Wipe data/Factory Reset" then scroll to "Yes" and select.

4- Scroll down and select "Wipe Cache Partition" and then select "Yes"

5- Scroll down and select "Advanced" and select "Wipe Dalvik Cache" and then select "Yes" then scroll down and select "Go Back"

6- Sroll down and select "mounts and storage" then scroll down and select ONLY these 3 listed, "format data" and then select "Yes", then scroll down and select "format cache" and then select "Yes", then scroll down and select "format system" and then select "Yes". Then scroll down to and select "Go Back"

7- Then scroll down to "Install Zip From Sd", if you put the ROM on your external SD card select "choose zip from SD". If you put it on your internal scroll down and select 'choose zip from internal". Then after you selected one of those depended on where you put the ROM, scroll down and select the ROM and then Select "Yes".

select "reboot system now"

and you are now a veteran ROM flasher;)

Didn't work. I did this and also unmounted...manually removed the card...reinserted...mounted. Still nothing.
I do have my pics and music that I had from before the new ROM.

No. The apps I had before I flashed are nowhere to be found in my phone or in my sd card.

First flash of a ROM Memo?
First backup in CWR would back up the phone just as it is(apps and data for apps). Did you do a backup in recovery prior to flashing the ROM:confused:

Most apps download to the internal SD when downloaded-so unless you moved them to the external SD the are gone when wiped prior to flashing the ROM.

TB(Titanium Backup) is what I have be using to back up all my user apps.

Yes, first time flashing and I did do a backup before flashing.
Most of my apps were moved to the SD card using app2SD. I had apps like juice defender, super user & screen shot it that I can't find now. Along with titanium backup.

OK..I really don't know where they went.

Just re-download them all...set your logins and passwords per each app

Then use Titanium in batch to "back up all user apps + system data"

Then whenever you flash another ROM or have to go back to stock you just "restore missing apps +all system data"

Painless:D

This is what I was thinking I was going to have to do. Not to big a problem since my phone is only 1 week old and i didnt have too many apps.

Question, after I flashed, TB was gone from the phone. Would I have to DL it again if I flash another ROM? and if so, would the newly DLed TB restore my previous apps if i "backup all user app + system data" before flashing? Does the question make sense?

As long as your Titanium back up data wasn't also deleted, you should be able to download TB again and load your backup.

NO because when you back up all user apps(TB is a user app) it will be put back on your phone when you restore.

restore my previous apps if i "backup all user app + system data" before flashing?

YES When it backups everything TB puts the backup on your external SD;)
TB will gather that backup after your SD has complete scanning.

Now I'm starting to understand. So basically my problem was not backing up my apps using TB, right?
