VZW: SGTab-10.1 bluetooth tether to SGNexus

I've been trying to get Bluetooth tethering working on my Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 Wifi-Only to my Verizon Samsung Galaxy Nexus.

I've got the two bluetooth devices paired but I still get no Internet connection.

What I did was:
SGT: Enabled Flight Mode
SGT: Enabled Bluetooth
SGT: Made device visible
SGN: Enabled Bluetooth
SGN: Made device visible
SGN: Search for devices (found SGT)
SGN: Confirmed passkey for pairing
SGT: Accepted pairing
SGT: Disabled Flight Mode

Now on both devices you see the other device listed as paired under Bluetooth Devices

I see a Profile listed on the SGT device which is "Tethering" and when you touch it then it spins and when it stops spinning it shows "Use for Internet access".

What I don't see is any Profile listed under my SGT device on the SGN phone which I think is necessary and will probably have an option like "allow internet connection" or something similar. Right now that is missing.

Does anyone have bluetooth tethering working between the Tab and the Nexus phone?

thought you needed a "tether app" like PDAnet to do that... I could be wrong though...

I've read that a tether app is not necessary. Well at least some people using other Android phones are successfully bluetooth tethering without them.

I'd like to find out some users that have successfully bluetooth tethered the Tab and Nexus together and how each of them is doing it.

.

After further investigation it looks as though Verizon has intentionally blocked bluetooth tethering.

On the SGNexus when you try to check the box in:
Settings | Wireless & networks | Tethering and portable hotspot | Bluetooth tethering

it brings up a box that says "Checking your subscription status. Please wait..." and then a Subscription box pops up asking you to pay a monthly subscription fee.

I can understand that perhaps for those that are on an unlimited data plan where tethering might cause more data usage but I'm on a limited data plan so this makes no sense whatsoever. Verizon should not be involved in how I use my limited data allotment.

So is the only option here to root the phone?

yes. codename android rom has a built-in hotspot and tethering setting which replaces the verizon subscription check.

Thanks for that info.

It is still ridiculous that Verizon wants to charge a tethering fee on a "limited" data plan. A tethering fee only makes sense on "unlimited" plans.
