Or they have a tougher QC department that doesn't just throw whatever the OEM gives them into the wild. I know that's why Verizon doesn't push out updates as fast as competitors, because they test the living crap out of the software before it's pushed out.

Yep, I didn't mean to dis carrier testing. OK, maybe a little. The Thunderbolt (Verizon) got an Evo update once. And our QA for the 3D hasn't been perfect.

I am ok with waiting for ICS if it means bug fixing.

I am not OK with waiting just because.

And we can't know - but I will be lurking in the Sensation forum when their update hits. ;)

Agreed. I don't mind waiting for the update just for the fact that what will it do that you can use that you can't do now? As far as my phone goes, it's flawless. It never freezes up nor does it ever bug out. ICS will be neat with some features that are brought to it but I'm not sure how HTC will do it.

Really? LOL I mean, yeah, the Evo 4G and TBolt are about as similar as the Evo 3D and the Sensation, but still...different carriers and all.

I'll admit I'm basing my entire statement off my experience with the Droid X. We had leaked ROMs about 3-4 months before it was officially released. Even the 'finalized' leaked ROM was out for a 30-45 days before they pushed the OTA.

LoL yep, that happened.

Sprint and VZW seemed to be really slugging it out for mindshare between the Evo and the DX. The Evo was the first after the Nexus to get the Froyo OTA, while the DX was the first after the Nexus to get Gingerbread.

I am not sure where the two carriers stand now, it's been a while since I've seen update statistics.

As for HTC, I am a little confused by them cooling their ICS commitment date. I hope we get clarification at or just following Mobile World Congress at the end of this month.

While clarification would be nice, I doubt we get anything specific. Upgrading the Sensation is probably just taking longer than expected. I'll speculate that they want to complete the Sensation upgrade first for two reasons: They have more Sensation customers than any other of their ICS capable handsets and most of their other devices are similar to the Sensation, so that it would provide a decent framework for the other devices.

And I also bet that they haven't even started building the 3D driver for ICS, yet.

Boo urns!

In the meantime more battery consumption, OS stability improvement updates are welcome even if it means we never actually get ICS. id take a solid stable and fast gingerbread than a buggy, nice when it works ICS

Looks like the sense launcher is out in ICS for HTC, they previewed some new phones that are ICS and the sense launcher is gone, replaced by the ICS launcher

I don't know. The new phones at MWC are ICS with Sense 4, and the Sensation ICS leaks so far show it with Sense 3.6, similar in appearance.

Google has levied a Holo theme requirement for all ICS phones that access the Market, to set look and feel requirements.

I think that I am going to expect 3.6 on our update.

It's quite different from the Sense we're running now in that it opens up more customization options, such as the Holo theme. We're going to lose the traditional curved bottom in favor of the floating block layout at the bottom that plain Android lovers prefer.

I guess that it's time to embrace change.

If there are links showing new phones without Sense, I would like to see them, but I reserve the right to remain skeptical until then. :)

If you are referencing the post that is I believe two up from you, he said that the Sense launcher is gone. Not that Sense is gone entirely :)

I was just referring to the launcher

I understood that clearly, I was including the launcher.

Once upon a time, you could disable it easily on an HTC.

Are they going back to that? Or did you see the Sense 4 launcher with a Holo theme?

Do you remember where you saw it?

Sorry this is off topic,
But Early, did you see the updated Samsung Beam yet (Now dubbed Galaxy Beam)? I remember you posting about it back in 2010 when it was still a bit of a concept. You've always had an eye for pico projectors too.

Kinda cool, they slimmed the whole unit down some. Before it was even more brick like. It now has 15 lumens output, and it projects comfortably to around 50" it is reported. Its just too bad it can't project a clearer resolution - but hey what can you expect from a projecting phone at this point.

Good memory. :) Yeah, pretty cool that they've started to deliver.

Relating it back to topic, who remembers HTC Link? That little box that they show every year but you can never buy?

This year they're showing Link HD, and so far as I can tell, supporting that is the difference between Sense 3.6 and 4 (it's an hdmi box you hook to your tv and you radio your 3D screen to it).

PS off topic - did you see the recent revival of the sd card with nfc? Another gem from 2010. :)

Interesting explanation on the 3.6 - 4.0 difference, I hope that is not all it boils down to though. That would be frustrating to only have that little of a change between versions unless there is an internal hardware specific reason for it. They should not hold back new software features from people solely for exclusivity's sake. Thats why things are so fractured as it is.

The new Media Link HD actually seems like an accessory that might be worth purchasing I'm thinking. Not that I even use that feature of a smartphone. Which is weird because it is not much different than what was offered before in the past years. Maybe they are trying to break peoples will via repetition.

Yeah, what a disappointment that they are only limited to 1 GB storage though (currently). Its laughable really. :D
The extra NFC structure debilitates the external storage to such a degree that it renders it near pointless.

Early, all i saw was the engadget hands on, and it looked like sense with ics launcher, that is all i saw.

That's the new Sense launcher.

I have heard that the notification bar is pure ice cream. The 3.6 one looks like ours.

Haven't watched their vid yet.

So are we getting Sense 4.0 with our ICS update?

Edit: I just read and it looks like we're getting 3.6 which is basically 4.0, right? I just love the new 4.0 launcher & widgets. I really don't like the 3.0 launcher/widgets. =(

Still a lot of rumors flying - I do know for sure that last month, the Sensation was getting tested by HTC with Sense 3.6 and ICS.

However - we might get Sense 4, or that may have something to do with the new hardware - just too soon to say.

From the crappy videos I've seen, Sense 3.6 looks very similar.

And I need to go back and pull up the zillion pages I've looked through this last week, I'm pretty sure that one of the Sense themes had that lower row transparent/translucent rather than a dark box.

Bought time we got landscape homescreens, I've only been waiting since Sense 1. :D

PS - They sure borked the button layout on that new phone, absolutely, completely and totally.

Funny thing...every Android manufacturer other than HTC has their arrangement: Menu, Home, Back, Search.

But every Honeycomb tablet I've ever seen has the arrangement: Back, Home, Menu/Function/whatever the hell it is this week. So it looks like it's just in line with what Google/Android has as standard, which is not the standard that the OEMs have decided.

Although, it is funny if I hand my device to someone who has a Samsung or a Motorola. They try to push menu and go to the home screen.

I know I'm getting ahead of myself but will we need to backup our pictures/apps/contacts before the ICS update installs sometime this Spring?

I'm really hoping for Sense 4.0 because it looks basically like vanilla ICS with some HTC widgets. That's awesome!

It's never the wrong time for a backup. :)

And the correct button order is major function least function such as help, according to Windows and Macs, thereby establishing Home, Menu, Back, and Search as the correct set and correct order. (And something like a year ago, we had pictures of some 6 or 7 different layouts. Next, the Goog is calling to get rid of the Menu button. They are clueless on this, many devs are hating them right now.)

Look what Google did to the stock Nexus - no search button, Google search bar locked into position on a home screen. Big whoop, you can 3rd-party mod to remove it - but if you don't know how, you have to look at their search tool widget, day in, day out.

Compare with HTC - search button is context sensitive, you're at the homescreen, it searches whatever, you're in contacts, it searches contacts...

When you lack basic functionality, sure, leave off the buttons. Let's all dumb down to that.

I've used the three-button catastrophes and the catastrophes in the wrong order - can. not. stand. them.

PS - 3.6 seems to look the same as 4.0, thanks to the Google Holo requirement.

Although while we're on the order of buttons...I thought one of the advantages Google was talking about with software based buttons was that you could not only change them to fit a particular theme, but change the order of them to user preference.

And the search bar is a pita. I've tried a few of the ICS ROMs that are floating around for our device and yeah...you can disable that bar, but the screen real estate it occupied isn't reclaimed by the widgets below it. It's just an empty spot. It drives me nuts. I hope the GNex and official builds of ICS are coded to reclaim that area.
