Root Flashing First ROM

xxkmanxx

Lurker
I rooted my phone and have the ArmonRa Recovery. I plan to install the CleanROM GBE 1.7 with the Incredikernel. So before i do anything I should make a nandroid backup, is like save the current state of the phone rom and kernel and if i need to restore this backup? and with most nandroid apps they talk about clockworkmod, I just wanna make sure creating a nandroid backup with ArmonRa is fine. I'm new to this i just want to know if i have to do anything special when installing a different kernel then the mod uses.

Thanks.

amon will make your backups just fine. it will back up the boot image as well. :)

my procedure for rom flashing is:
1)put rom on sd card
2)put kernel in adb file
3)go to recovery
4)make backup
5)wipe data/cache/dalvik
6)install rom
7)go to bootloader(fastboot)
8)flash kernel
9) reboot

so to directly answer your question,if youre installing a different kernel at the time you first flash the rom,you do not need to do anything special. just flash the kernel you want, instead of the rom devs kernel.

if your installing a new kernel after the fact, youll want to:
1)put new kernel in adb file
2)boot to recovery
3)wipe cache/wipe dalvik
4)go to bootloader(fastboot)
5)flash kernel
6)reboot

last and not least, heres a little more detail(commands and explantions) about how i flash roms: http://androidforums.com/rezound-all-things-root/499172-how-manually-flash-roms.html

So i have this CleanROM GBE 1.7 which has a kernel included in it. Will the kernel from that automatically install or can i stop it and install this new kernel? Also, that guide says it needs my Recovery image, is that the PH98IMG.zip that i used to install ArmonRa ?

Save yourself some time and get titanium backup. It will backup you user apps and settings. So when you start down the addictive road of rom flashing.

yes, pull the amon ra recovery image out of the PH98IMG that you used to install it.

the rom is set up so that after install is complete,a script will boot you to fastboot. from there, you can push power to select "bootloader",where theoretically hboot will find the PH98IMG that the rom flash deposits on your sd card, and will ask you if you wish to update it.

so,basically the rom install should just automatically take you to step 12,and let you skip step 11.

so basically you want to:
-do steps 1-10,using your new kernel in place of the one that comes with clean rom.
-when rom install kicks you over to fastboot, jump to step 12.
-wait for your phone to boot, when it does connect it to the PC,or use a file manager to find and delete PH98IMG from your sd card that was placed there by the rom install. you wouldnt want to accidentally install that kernel if you ever need to get to recovery thru hboot

this is good advice. get the paid pro key,its well worth the $$.

my only comment is to only backup user apps. do not back up any system settings and try and restore them onto a different rom,as small issues and force closes can arise.

I don't like this method because some apps don't save their settings to SD card and when you use Titanium to restore user apps, you lose a lot of data you spent hours inputting. Unfortunately, I don't know of another way. I assume restoring the system data can make the phone unstable after flashing a ROM since system data may conflict with the ROM.

I find that CleanROM (and some other ROMs) forces me into bootloader and automatically reflashes PH98IMG. If I haven't deleted the PH98IMG file, I'm stuck in a PH98IMG flashing loop, forcing me to do a battery pull. I hate when ROM devs do this. I would rather manually have the option to make HBOOT find PH98IMG which means I have to alter the ROM zip file.

i dont like it either.

however, when the rom installs, and forces you to fastboot, just run the command to flash your kernel:

fastboot flash boot <bootimagename>.img

after it finishes,then:
fastboot reboot

and when your phone boots, immediately plug it in,mount as disc drive, and delete the PH98IMG that the rom deposits.

i.e.,dont push power to get to hboot once the rom dumps you into fastboot. :)
