Root Partial Root Gone Bad, Need to Unbrick in Newbie Terminology

Hello Everyone! My friend recently tried to root his phone and foolishly unplugged it before the rooting finished. Now his phone doesn't boot-up all the way and just does the following:

When you start it up it says

Deleting Cryption Meta Data
-Copying media files....
Successfully copied meida (sic) files.

#manual mode#

updating application....
Successfully updated application

applying multi-CSC
Successfully applied multi-CSC

And a menu comes up, the title of the menu "Android system recovery <3e>"
with 4 options
reboot system now
apply update from sdcard
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition

you can use the arrow keys to go up and down in the menu, but you
can't select any of the options.

no other response unless you press the search button, it shows the
picture of a triangle with a ! in it with the droid guy looking at it.

Any suggestion or can you point me to a tread that solves this issue?

I have the right drivers per the xda link. The phone is in Odin mode. Odin has been used on the device before but I guess the cable was unplugged before the flash completed, which is the cause of this problem. I've switched to a thicker blackberry cord too and have tried every usb port on my computer, all with no luck, still no yellow com showing up in Odin.

Sorry for the image sizes being so big. These are the two screens I have access to, the first one is the screen I get from normal start-up and the second is Odin mode.

It sounds like the drivers are not "installing" correctly if you can't flash the linked Odin program from the XDA. Keep your phone unplugged this whole time then un-install the drivers you have installed now, install the drivers again then dis-connect from the internet and then start the Odin program up. Put the phone into download mode and then plug it into the computer and let the computer find the drivers for it this time the correct ones that you installed instead of what windows would've found on the internet. Now you should have a yellow box on the Odin program saying what port you phone is on and you can hit start.

Carsfanatic: Thank you for the response. I tried doing exactly what you say, but no yellow com. I know it's not my computer either because I can get my gf's Epic Touch to be recognized no problem. Someone has said this might be a malfunctioning USB on the phone itself, but since I can't do anything in recovery mode like resetting it, I don't know what my options are.

I personally don't have one for you but, you can look for a stock backup to use in recovery and instructions on where to place it on the sd or internal memory card. If you can access it at least.

Everyone, after doing more research, I'm quite sure the USB on the phone is malfunctioning, thus it's a hardware issue. People have said this can happen when a ROM doesn't flash right. So, I just broke down and sent it to mobiletechvideos.com to get a jtag brick repair. From the sites FAQ's it seems like they specialize in this situation and actually take the phone apart to by-pass the USB port, flash it directly and get the USB working again while putting it back to stock ROM. Cost $59 after shipping but I guess that's better than buying a new phone. Thanks again for your help.

I don't know if you replaced your phone yet but have you tried making or buying a USB jig? I know it forces the phone into download mode and is supposed to clear the custom binary counter.

I know its not a hardware issue. I had 1 with the same issue and got a replacement.
