I just got my S2 earlier this week. Loving it but fairly perplexed by the absence of a users manual in the box. (ATT screwed me out of a decent oem headset as well i think.) This phone does a bunch and i like it but there's a billion simple qustions i have.

1. Is there a manual somewhere? I'm lazy and havn't searched the web yet. My general rule of thumb with any electronic purchase over $50 is to visit the crapper with the manual and have a study session before i even turn it on.

2. If you have two widgets on a page can you swap their placement (top/bottom) with out having to drag one to another page then drag the top one down and then go to the other page and drag it back? I guess i could delete one and repost it after i move the other but that still seems dumb.

3. I just got out of a BB torch, every app and section of the phone had an option menu and tiny "help" file. A lot of stuff on the S2 doesn't seem to. Took me a few minutes trying to figure out that the buddy widget wasn't part of the facebook widget that was above it.

4. When i get a few notifications, say 4, i pull down the notification bar and look at em. the problem is they never go away until i click the damn app open it up and close it. Tell me i'm an idiot and i'm missing something.

5. Do we or do we not have an NFC thingy that will someday work in our att S2 phones? I'm getting mixed answers on this. I understood we do have them and it would "most likley" work when we get ICS which should be around Febuary of 2012. Please correct or educate me.

6. I have so many more dumb noob questions, this will warrent a sticky thread, however, we'll start off at 5. Trust me, i'll post more in the next 10 min.

Now for a shameful question.

What is rooting or flashing a rom and why would you do it?
 
I got the warranty guide and quick start card, but no manual. Not at I really needed it, and they do offer one online. I didn't get a headset either.

2. You either have to move one out of the way or delete it. That's the way it works.

3. Help would have to be at the app level and add a good bit to the overhead.

4. pull, clear, done.

5. I do believe the chip is in there, but i don't think it's enabled and no apps use it.

6. Next ten, please. :D

Rooting is gaining administrative access to the system files so you can screw them up modify them to add functionality to your device. ;) Flashing a rom is replacing the stock OS with a customized one. Some people want to make their phones faster or remove the carrier installed apps, or want to update to a later version before the official version is released. There are many more reasons why people root and flash, but if you aren't sure, there's really no need to.
 
Thanks guys! I can't believe I didn't get flamed! I pretty much had a good idea about the rooting and flashing and stuff but a definitive answer is greatly appreciated! I'm currently perusing the manual to either answer some questions or generate more. A good example would be the definition for voice command and voice talk; two separate apps. Both apps say: With the Voice talk application you can use your voice to
perform operations that you would normally have to do by
hand such as dialing a phone number, texting a message,
playing music, etc. For more information, refer to “Voice
Talk” on page 161.

Ok got a few more:

Call log is showing me my text history. Can it just show calls made missed and recieved and not show messages?

If not, do you know if ICS addresses this?

My old phone had a podcast downloader and manager. Any opinions on the best free android app for that?

Do you know if anybody makes a decent in ear headset with a mic and answer button?

Lookout or MobiUcare?

Which is better and why "Att navigator" or "Navigation" or is there a better yet free app?

When you are on the log screen, press the menu key and select view by. You will learn the the menu key is context sensitive. :D

a lot of people use DoggCatcher Podcast Player for Android | AppBrain.com but there are free ones too.

Navigation is Google's free turn-by-turn navigation. All you need is a data connection to get the maps.

You didn't ask any flammable questions. ;)

Actually, I've found this to be true about androidforums.com. They're more mod heavy than most forums... and they're lurking a LOT. While a lot of people don't like being moderated so heavily... having been in their shoes, I know their way, is the best way. It makes for a MUCH better user experience.

I discovered the forums, when I had my Captivate. I had been using a different forum, when I had my LG and switched with the Samsung. Even got into it, with one of the mods... because of the change in attitude between boards. Still... the best decision I ever made. Learned more here, than anywhere else. Its why I just morphed over to this sub-forum, when I got the GSII.

I haven't found one, that the button works with. It will pause/start music... but won't answer/hangup. A real drag, IMO. Personally, I like the OEM set that came with the Captivate and you can pick up on Amazon for like $5. I've bought a couple of other sets in the $30-$40 range and still the Samsung sound better.

There's a big debate brewing, right now... if these programs are really just nothing more, than preying on people's fears. The threat that exists out there, isn't great enough to warrant this protection. Now, some of the features, I think are good ideas, in regards to location and wiping the phone. I used Lookout, until the end, with my Captivate. However, it got to the point, where it was slowing my phone to a crawl (running Serendipity v7 ROM). I switched to AVG (paid version) and haven't looked back. It works flawlessly in the background. It has the locate feature also and they're adding the wipe feature and app lockers into it.

The AT&T app, is a pay one. Navigation uses Google maps and navigation. Its the better choice. You don't need anything more. Though, you might like to d/l MyTracks also, to see how accurate your GPS is. Its free to.
