Root strange thing happened whilst rooting desire

Hi, ive just tried s-off and rooting my HTC desire so that I can flash custom ROM's, this is my first time doing this ever and ive been studying it for weeks, I cant say I was calm about doing it, in fact I was bricking myself all the way through, however it seems to have gone well other than one slight thing.

After careful study I decided to go with a video and step-by-step insturctions on the unlockr site, including links to all the required files, the revolutionary method.

I have the Revo Stock hboot now and also have clockworkmod on my phone, I followed the root instructions to the letter as well as follow the video, however decided to use clockworkmod first to make a backup and restore image to my sdcard first incase anything went wrong, I then installed the superuser.zip file, it said this all went fine and installed successfully and enjoy, after a reboot of the phone, I have no superuser in the apps menu ?

Tried installing it again, once again it said successful and enjoy, but still no superuser in the apps menu ?

I decided to goto market and download Su myself, it installed fine, so thought I would test it by installing titanium backup, upon running titanium, it gave me an error saying it was unable to gain access to the root and would not work.

If I wanted to just root my phone again now, im not sure which way to do it as I now have a strange hboot version on my phone ?

Im also new to these forums and wasnt sure if this was the right place to post this, any help would be greatly appreciated.

You dont need root on your current rom if you want to install custom roms... You can just flash them.

Ok thanks, thought I needed to root and soff before doing this, it will also be my first time flashing a custom Rom, got any links to any good guides by any chance ?

I also have had a strange result trying to root my HTC Desire using Unrevoked3. All went well until suddenly the procedure halted and the Unrevoked window flashed a message 'Is your firmware too recent?'

Does anyone have any idea why that should happen?

One thought of mine: in order to conserve storage space, some time ago, I used the method utilising android-sdk-windows tools and 'pm setInstallLocation 2'. Should I reverse that for the rooting process to work properly? If so, is the correct installLocation 1 or 0?

Audiobear yes I think I know what your problem is, can u post your hboot info like I did at the bottom of my 1st post, does it roughly read the same as mine ? (to get it, switch the phone off, hold down the volume down key and press the power button at the same time

Thanks SUroot I will take a look, and dont worry I will be reading up on it for weeks before I take the plunge into doing it as I did with rooting too.

Your hboot is 0 93 0001 by the way, your not rooted or s off, everything is pretty standard, try using this way here linked below, its the one I used, I followed the video pausing and rewinding on bits I got a bit stuck on, this was the best way I found after weeks of studying it.

Just one tip, when you generate the beta key, copy and paste it to a notepad document so u can clearly see which letters are capitals and which arnt, u will see what I mean when u get to that stage, u will also need your serial number of your phone which can be found on the phone under your battery and that correct hboot number I just gave u.

Your serial number for your phone can also be found by pressing menu / settings / about phone / phone identity.

Are you following MY root guide here? If not, please do. We have a community here who have contributed to and support this guide. We cannot easily help you if you use other guides. We keep ours up to date and they have everything you need.

This error is also mentioned in our rooting faq. Please follow the link I posted earlier....

Seanie, please don't take this the wrong way. We just prefer to support our maintained guides

No that's ok, I understand, if i had of found your guide when I was trying to do it I probably would of investigated it to, I only looked into the revolutionary and unrevoked ways and peoples opinions on them.

Hi Seanie,

The guides SUroot mentions are for unrevoked and revolutionary. Just that members of this forum keep them up to date and have checked their contents. We can't vouch for other guides in the same way.

Well, after a couple of stumbles, I think I've managed to root the phone using the Revolutionary method - I couldn't get the UnRevoked method to work properly - and then successfully install Cyanogen Mod 7. Now all I have to do is master the new interface!

I think I have a driver BUT unsure if it's the correct one. The procedure described in the xda-developers page was - to me - an unbelievably complicated rigmarole, so I just gave up on that. I have used MyPhoneExplorer successfully to view files, contacts etc on my HTC Desire when connecting via the USB cable

What I still can't get are the Google Apps, like The Market. I downloaded a file called gapps-gb-20110828-signed.zip but there is NO guidance on what to do with it. So I gave up on that as well.

So I tried an alternative route to get a file called com.android.vending=3.1.3.apk which is supposed to be the latest Market App. I installed that successfully, then opened it. I got a splash screen saying I needed to "add an account for the device to continue. Do you want to add one? " I click Yes and promptly get thrown out back to the desktop. What on earth is happening here?

Despite all the benefits I have read of rooting, I am rapidly finding it is more of a geeks world that something straightforward - and I say that as something who is reasonably IT literate.

It's a little unfortunate that CM7 needs more setting up than most custom ROMs, because it's also the most widely known one and hence often the first ROM people flash.

The 2 main things with CM7 are:

1) you need to flash the gapps zip from recovery (as Nicka3200 has said) in order to install the Market. This isn't CM's preference, but a consequence of a legal tussle with Google.

2) if you want to use an ext partition on your sd card to expand storage you have to install that option too (most ROMs come with this, unless like dGB they are specifically intended not to need it). It's easy enough - the simplest is to install an app called Simple2Ext from the market - but it's also not included. Of course this one is optional (few people are happy without the market!).

It's just one extra flash from recovery, and an optional app install if that is wanted (and partitioning the card in that case, but you need that to use A2SD+ on any ROM). So it's not much, but it's a couple of extra things that you have to do that are already there on most other ROMs.

Thanks Hadron for the tip on S2E. Despite using SDmove (rather than A2SD) I have still found a lot of internal memory has been used up - and in fact deleted some apps to make more space. So I'll try S2E and see how I get on with that.

Having followed the links on using S2E, and partitioning the SD card to create an ext2 partition, I happened to check my own partitioning software, Easeus 9.0 (which free!). It seems that as well as creating partitions in the usual FAT versions etc, it can create ext2 partitions. So I'll try using that on my SD card rather get-parted-live-0.12.0.iso. I'll let you know in due course how that works

You probably want to go for Ext3 or Ext4 rather than Ext2 as it pretty long in the tooth - will easeus handle that? If not Gparted is recommended for partioning SD - see SURoot's guide on running it under VMWare, an easier option than creating iso CD to boot from.

Hadron just noticed you're a Guide, kudos mate (has it been long, i'm pretty unobservant tbh ;))

Easeus successfully partitioned my SD card: first larger one as FAT32 as primary; second one as EXT3, logical. BUT, my HTC Desire would not read the card at all. Have tried twice, second time wiping the card, reformatting and copying the FAT32 contents back. Am I doing something wrong?

Imho if Youre not using Gparted, yes you're doing something wrong. Easeus, minI tool -theyre,windows applications. Extended file system is Linux. For best results use Linux based partitioning tools (e.g or I.e Gparted).

As good as Easeus is supposed to be, don't expect too much from it. Use Gparted

Yep, EXT partition also needs to be Primary - and as has been said, play safe, use Gparted ;)

@Hadron - only a couple of weeks, that's not bad for me!
