Root WIFI tether not seen by other androids?

I have been trying to get my friends mytouch and G1 to see my wifi tether but it doesn't seem any android phone (including the droid) can see it or connect to it. ipod touch's and iphone see it and connect just fine. anyone else experience this and whats the issue?
 
none of my dumb friends have androids, i was wanting to test this. my brother can connect with his palm pre.

im not so sure about that. there is a program called Hoccer that allows you to throw data to other phones and it uses ad-hoc. it works great between droids and iphone

It uses geolocation, and uploads the file you're "hoccing" to their server, then pushes that file to the receiving phone.

There's actually no direct connection being established between the two phones, AFAIK.

idk in the app it says this

"hoccer is your application for ad-hoc data exchange"
also doesn't work if you are connected to wifi so leads me to believe it is infact ad-hoc

Yeah, but have you used the application? Why does the thrower upload the file first before the catcher can download it? That's evidence enough that it's not a true ad-hoc connection.

Regardless, that doesn't change the fact that the Android OS can not currently connect to ad-hoc wifi networks. See below:

Its true that starting or connecting to an adhoc network is impossible on an unrooted android device even on the new 2.2 release but finding it using a app like wifi analyzer is. The procedure is not that hard its just that google dos not want to enable adhoc. Having said that im gettin more and more confused about the fact that people still are led to belive that hoccer uses adhoc. That. Should have been a scandal.
 
Maybe it does'nt work is because there is no need. Or atleast I don't understand why there would be .... bluetooth file transfer works well.
