Root [CDMA] Undelivered texts...rooted, running CleanROM

Shake88

Newbie
I'm rooted (HTC unlock), running CleanROM, and am having a problem with text messages never being delivered. My phone indicates they've been sent, but they never arrive at their destination.

Could this be a result of rooting? Is it a ROM issue? A problem with my phone?

If I were to call Sprint, what can I expect? Will they deny me assistance due to having a rooted handset? If they try to push me updates, will that cause me problems?

Any suggestions would be helpful.

Before you call Sprint or do anything crazy, go to Settings > Applications > Manage Applications > All tab > Messenger > Clear Data.

If that doesn't fix it, reboot into recovery and clear the cache and dalvik cache. Try again. Let us know if either of those fix your issue.

And no, your problem isn't the result of rooting or the ROM. I used CleanROM for months without an issue. If text messaging got broke due to rooting, a lot fewer of us wouldn't do it until it got fixed :)

I tried both today and had no results with either. I'm still seeing undelivered text messages to both other phones, and email addresses. I should make it clear that some of my messages get through, but I'd say up to 15% are never delivered.

Things I've tried so far:

Updated my profile
Updated my PRL
Cleared the Messages app data via application manager
Cleared the cache and davlik cache

Any other suggestions?

This is very frustrating. Starting to really question Sprint, my EVO 3D purchase, and the decision to root.

I have 4 others. Have you tried either Handcent, Go SMS, or any other third party messaging app?

The second is: Have you tried flashing another ROM? Or the stock ROM? I've had trouble with certain ROMs before.

The third is: Try contacting Sprint about it, they've been said to service rooted phones.

The last is a bit more complicated. Google Voice integration. Google Voice will make it so your text messages get sent through your internet connection instead of through Sprint's messaging service. GV will also take over your voice mail service, too. The down side is that it doesn't support MMS.

I should have included the following (in the order I tried them):

Things I've tried so far:

Updated from CleanROM to CleanROM Reborn (problems were present with both ROMs, did a full wipe, cache wipe, davlik cache wipe)

Updated my profile

Updated my PRL

Tried Handcent

Cleared the Messages app data via application manager

Cleared the cache and davlik cache

Tried GoSMS

I'll now try going back to the stock ROM (speaking of stock, where can I get the stock ROM, or do I go to my nandroid backup?).

If the stock ROM doesn't change things, I guess my only option is to go to Sprint. I can't live with a phone where sending a text message is a hit or miss proposition. Pretty disappointed with the phone so far.

If you made a Nandroid of the stock rom, restore that.

Also, you can call Sprint and ask them for help without telling them you are rooted.

If you want to try another rom, I would recommend Fresh or ViperROM.

I have had some times where Sprint has dropped or delayed sending sms. It's rarely the phone and normally the network. Always the sms to the wife that gets lost. I have been rooted 90% of the past 3 years. Sometimes the rom doesn't flash cleanly and causes issues, but it is rare. Always wipe data, system and cache for best results.

you suggested.

I've never restored from a backup. Is it as simple as this?:

Place folder containing nandroid backup on the SD card
Boot to recovery
Wipe cache, davlik cache, factory reset
In recovery restore from backup folder

It's actually simpler than that. Your nandroid should be on the SD card already.

Then restore nandroid. Afterwards, I'd recommend you clear cache/dalvik, just to make sure that there's no conflicts in either. Also, I'd recommend to clear cache and dalvik before making the backup, because there's no point in backing up that stuff, anyways.

Also, for a stock ROM, you can find those here: [ROM] Stock Rooted Htc Evo 3D/Shooter Odex & Deodex Roms 1/17/2011 (2.17 ADDED) - xda-developers

Just get the odex version for whatever software build you're on. If you're on CleanROM Reborn, get 2.17.651.5 odex. If you're on CleanROM 3.0 or DE 2.0 and haven't flashed the new radios, then get something older, like 2.08.651.3 odex.

CleanROM Reborn came with LeeDroid tweaks, as does ViperROM. One feature missing in the ViperROM version that I loved, was the ability to wake the phone with the volume buttons (or the camera).

Any way to update the version of LeeDroid Tweaks in ViperROM?

TIA

I was able to get LeeDroid Tweaks updated. I actually think the option was there in the version I was using...I just wasn't seeing it.

I've been running ViperROM for the last couple of days. It seems to have better battery life than CleanROM. I really like the ROM. So far I've had no undelivered texts that I'm aware of. I'll keep testing it for the next few days. I'm hoping I've solved my problem.

Awesome! ViperROM is a good ROM. I used it for awhile. There are some decent themes for it, too.

it isn't the ROM, it is sprint's network.

give it a few days and all those undelivered texts will show up one after another after another. It's happened to me a few times now. it is so bad that the wife and I have to compare our messages sent to each other every once in a while to see what we haven't got yet.

sorry to pull up a slightly old thread, but I wanted to add that it could in fact be the rom. A short while ago I was having this issue and reloaded the rom completely fixing the problem. I was also on Cleanrom. So if you found this thread googling then know that reloading the rom could potentially fix the problem.

You never know when something might be off in the ROM. Improper wipe prior to flashing is the most common cause. I've had issues in the past and what seemed to finally fix the issue sometimes was a fresh download of the ROM, put it on the SD card. Boot to recovery wipe dalvik and cache partition and flash the ROM again. As long as you don't wipe your data partition all of your apps and settings will be saved. ;)

Note: make sure its the same exact Rom and version number. :)

Sometimes wiping data is unavoidable. Settings from one ROM could be stored in /data and then it could conflict with a ROM you flash over it. I usually wipe data (and wipe dalvik/cache) whenever I'm having problems and reflash the ROM.

I've been running ViperROM since my last post in this thread. I love the ROME and battery life... BUT...

I continue to be plagued by the same problem. I don't belive it is Sprint's network, as I have acess to other Sprint phones, and they don't exhibit the same problems.

At this point, I'm lost as to what to try next. I could reflash the ROM, but I just flashed it recently and did a complete wipe/reset of the phone. I assume I'll end up with the same problem.

I could go back to stock, but I'm starting to believe I've got a problem that won't fix. I'm not happy at all with the phone. It's quickly becoming worthless to me because I can't rely on it.

Have you tried using Google Voice integration? Go to voice.google.com and set it up to sync between GV and your Sprint number. You can even choose to keep your sprint number. Then download GV and sync it to Sprint and Google and you should be using VoIP for texts instead of the Sprint network. You'll get MMS through the normal messenger app (or apps like Handcent, if you use them) and can even configure the GV app to route new GV messages through your messenger app.
