Help ICS: Transformer Shutting Off Mysteriously

same here as everyone...
i have an ASUS Transformer Eee Pad TF101. after the upgrade to ICS, it shuts itsef down, did that loop screen where it shows ''Eee Pad'... it just blinks and blinks and blinks. had that issue where it shows the ''ASUS'' and a circle below with the dots and just freezing...
and it all happend TODAY, all the three. and it turned off couple of times, maybe 3 or 4

Try the following to solve the mysterious shut down and difficulty in rebooting:

1. Turn off the Asus Transfer tablet.
2. Press and hold the bottom of the sound switch while pressing the the on/off switch to turn on.
3. Let the tablet complete the boot up or start up process.
4. Repeat Step 1.
5. Repeat Step 2.

I learned this from a friend and it has solved my problem.

Can anyone else confirm this fix? Not to be a skeptical jerk but this kinda sounds like snake oil...

^^^according to some folks that are FAR more technical than I ever hope to be..that answer is NO. Evidently the problem is something in the OS that is not cured with any kind of reset. This is evidenced by many posts of users that have done hard and factory resets...only to see it reboot or whatever within a few days

Auto Airplane app by Don seems to have fixed it for me and others. Just annoying to have an airplane icon next to the clock.

Things that I've tried that did not work (some only made the problem go away for a few days, others made no difference):

1. auto airplane mode by Don
2. disable/reenable screen shutdown in the developer mode
3. disable tegra zone updates
4. factory reset
5. removal of antivirus program (AVG)

What we really need is a debugger / logging tool that produce a detailed log of exactly what is going on in the background software and hardware wise and then see if there's a noticeable pattern in when the device shuts completely off. From my experience the shut off is abrupt as though you're taking the battery out of the device; immediate off. It can be hard to notice since most of the time the shut off occurs while the device screen is sleeping.

That's what Asus have done, they've asked non rooted users to install logging software on the tab and email them the results: http://androidforums.com/asus-eee-pad-transformer/519045-asus-needs-your-help-fix-our-tablet.html

I've had shutdowns when the screen is on unfortunately. :(

I have now had 5 days without a shutdown, Restart or Freeze. Its a pain in the ass but all I have done is use the quick icon in the notification area to turn off the wiFi every time before I put it into sleep mode. Start it back up and turn it off after I am done. One other plus is it saves battery life.

This doesn't absolve ASUS of getting us a fix but it seems to have worked as a temporary fix so I don't throw this thing out the window.

For me, auto airplane was a temporary fix. Unfortunately, it can take a week or more to find this out. I'm about to now try the wake lock app. It's got some pretty good results on a thread over at xda.

Yea, I've had mine shut down while in the middle of the ASUS boot animation.

While this is a nice attempt by ASUS with all do respect I didn't pay a small fortune for my tablet just to be an unofficial quality control engineer for ASUS. Does ASUS even provide the logging software?

They have sent out the software to some I believe, although some people didn't get a response.

I agree though, it's kind of making the tab unusable, I've had 2 reboots already tonight. Whilst they are doing something to fix, it is potentially a little too late.

I think the whole situation is the double edged sword that manufacturers have to deal with daily. If ICS has been delayed for further testing, that very vocal group of consumers would be clamoring for it and becoming increasingly unhappy with Asus. We see it every day with HTC, Samsung, Motorola, etc. Had there been no issues, we'd be singing Asus' praises for customer support and providing timely updates. This time it came back to bite them in the arse.

Although early to tell, the wake lock app may be the workaround for the shut downs, SOD, and reboots. Sacrifice some battery since it won't deep sleep, but not significantly..especially when compared to what it seems to prevent (random reboots, etc).

What I can say about it; no reset, no wake lock, no Airplane Mode no nothing will help other then Asus finally doing their thing in correcting the ICS version they distribute!!!

I must say; if I leave my TF101 alone; I shut down wifi (by a One-Click widget; freely downloadable in the Google Play Market) and then press the upper button to switch off the screen.
So far THAT does not cause any reboots although my battery gets devoured anyways....

I wonder why it's taking soo long to do something about it... If soo many users have this problem it must be something that CAN be solved alright! Plus the fact that the logging procedure has been going on for a while as well now...

I'm eagerly waiting (like all you guys) for a correctional update!

Regards!

^^I'm not that excited about the issues. But so far the wake lock app is proving to be the workaround and if it never gets patched, it's not the end of the world. I'll take a little battery consumption over the reboots, shut downs, etc

How is it consuming your battery more than before? With shutting my wifi off every time I put it into sleep mode its using less battery than if I left the wifi on. I must be missing something that you guys are doing.

I think everyone had some form of these issues with ICS. Either random reboots or the sleep of death. I was able to get rid of these issues by removing all unnecessary apps, and disabling the GPS. After that, my Transformer hasn't rebooted in over 10 days straight.

Update: the wake lock app is turning out to be the workaround for me. 3 days no issues and the side benefit is the gmail app is behaving nicely. Could hardly use it previously.

Hope I am not making a duplicate post if this has been covered here.

Got some info from Asus tech support after an hour on the phone. Seems to be
working so far. You'll need a blank Micro SD card.

From your PC go to support.Asus.com and search TF101 in the search box.

Click"download" then "Firmware"

Look for your version of the transformer. Mine I is 9.2.1.17 US

Extract file to blank micro sd and insert into tablet. You'll see an exclamation point pop up in the bottom notification bar. Tap it, and it'll do the rest. Good luck!

I also experience the issue where the sound cut out on me again. The data wipe did nothing to fix any of the ICS issue I had with my tablet.

Auto airplane mode did nothing for me, but I have found I don't get the reboots when plugged directly in to the wall charger. I still get them when docked though.

Yes, auto airplane mode did nothing for me either..but the wake lock app is definitely doing the trick. No rr's, shut downs, SOD or flashing screen in 10 days or so. A little tougher on the battery during idle, but completely does away with the ICS issues
