Trading In My iPhone 4 For the Bionic

Newbie
Been wanting an Android phone for sometime now. Tired of my iPhone 4, and I can't wait until my upgrade date to change it.

I'm gonna trade with someone tomorrow for the Bionic. Is this a good trade, specification wise?

I just want to get used to the Android Operating System until my real upgrade date (Nov. 2nd), so when I get a super phone (Galaxy Journal/Note, Galaxy Nexus, Galaxy S3) I'll be familiar with it.

Has anyone here switched from an iPhone to the Bionic? Is the transition hard? How easy is it to use? Is it difficult to remove Bloatware (Verizon apps), and is ICS really coming out next week for the Bionic?

Well, I haven't owned an iPhone, but have used one. I do have an iPod Touch 4th generation which is essentially an iPhone without the phone.

The first thing you will notice is the 4G capability, if you are in a 4G area. You shouldn't have much of an issue getting used to the android OS as it "feels" like more of a computer than the iOS does.

Hardware wise I think the Bionic is great. Theres also a lot of apps out there to allow you to customize the look of the phone, even make it look like an iPhone if you want.

I don't think you will be disappointed, but I don't see ICS being released next week for it. I did see an article on Tom's that showed a screenshot of something that said ICS would be pushed out for the Razr soon. Now, I don't know what difference, if any, that would need to be made for ICS for the Bionic than what is done for the Razr, but I would think the Bionic couldn't be too far away from recieving it than when the Razr does.

One thing to keep in mind using the Android Marketplace (Google Play) that is different than the iTunes appstore is you need to read the permissions for each app carefully. Google doesn't look over each app the way Apple does. For example, after The Big Bang Theory's episode feature the whip app, I went to look for one and the one claiming to be the one used on the show wanted permissions that it had no business wanting. But common sense will keep you safe enough and the freedom you get with Android more than offsets that small disadvantage.

Thanks for this.

Is it worth getting an extended battery for this? And if so, what brand and what price range is good?

I see a 3,300 mAH battery for $20, and I see an even better extended battery at 4,000 mAH for $15. So, what should I do?

Honestly, I would stick with the OEM extended battery you get from Motorola or Verizon designed for the phone rather than a 3rd party extended battery.

I know the 3rd party ones claim to have higher capacity, but when I was shopping for one, I heard nightmare stories about the batteries doing harm to the phone and also not really having the capacity they claim. (In all honesty, the same is true for other devices that take replacement batteries).

So yes, the extended battery is worth it, but just stick with the Moto one. Also keep in mind, so far most cases only fit the standard battery too. There is the TPU, skin type, case that is very popular among users on this board that will fit the extrended battery, as well as a hard shell case from Verizon.

The comments on the battery are absolutely correct. Stick with the OEM versions of the charger and battery that came with your Bionic.

I don't use an extended battery. You could try it with the standard battery to see if it meets your needs and get an extended battery from Verizon later if you need to. This is the advantage of a device with a changeable battery.

I have never used an iPhone. There have been a number of people passing through these forums who came from the iPhone. There seems to be an iPhone way of looking at things and many people are entrenched in that way. They are ultimately unhappy with Android anything and move back to iPhone. I suggest you have a "back out plan".

I switched from the Verizon Iphone to the bionic two months ago after purchasing the Bionic on ebay. I think the bionic is way more fun to use because its more customizable and is faster than the Iphone 4 in internet and hardware. The only dissapointment is the front and back cameras are not as good as the iphone4. Otherwise its an awesome Bionic system. I hope you still have your unlimited data plan too as 4g is FAST!! Enjoy.

the extended battery is a worthy accessory. It will give you a lot more battery life. i got the extended one from Verizon for $25.

going from a Touch to a Bionic (my first android phone) required a bit of learning to find where all the settings were but FWIW, I MUCH prefer Android OS to iOS.

I have unlimited 3G, so when I change my plan to 4G, will it continue to be unlimited, or will it be the 4gb for $30 promo offer that they have going on right now?

If you have unlimited you can stay grandfathered in, the speeds doesn't matter. Just make sure you talk to them about it because I have heard some say if you aren't careful, some Verizon people will try to switch you off the unlimited. A friend of mine had to be very specific on that.

I think it has something to do with not changing your calling plan or something like that, but the phone contract shouldn't matter.

Well, I was going to trade with some guy for his Bionic, but he ended up bailing out.

I found a guy on Craigslist about an hour later and traded for his phone, not a Bionic; but an HTC Rezound.

I love it. First Android phone, 4G speeds, 720p display, and I love watching youtube videos on it. Only complaint is that battery life could've been better, and the camera is ok.
