Root What the heck did I do!?

Newbie
Ok, so first off I took the most recent OTA update, so I had to flash my phone from 621 -> 604. I downloaded ROM manager and Droid 2 Bootstrap recovery and finally figured out how to boot it into recovery to make a nandroid backup, the first time I created a backup through bootstrap then finally I got it working through ROM manager so I created a backup through that. I figured I was safe so I decided to flash a new ROM. I read that 2init ROMs worked the best so I tried OMFGB and it failed to load...said [Status 7] I believe. So I tried to restore my nandroid backup...it failed to load so I rebooted and everything was back to a stock Milestone X. Since I was back to nothing I figured what the heck I'll try some other ROMs, so I tried CM9..failed to load. So theeen I found a thread that had ROMs specifically for those who have flashed from 621 -> 604 so I tried Liberty 3v2. It wouldn't upload through ROM Manager so In reboot I chose to load from sd card and it worked...or so I thought. Once I rebooted it was stuck on the Liberty load screen and nothing I would do worked, I was stuck. So I flashed back to 604 and had to re-install everything, every app one by one haha. Should I be using another app for nandroid backups? Is installing ROMs from sd card through ROM manager not a good idea or am I just downloading the wrong ROMs? I'm so confused, I'm afraid to flash any more ROMs for fear of having to start all over again.

*EDIT* When I say backup through ROM Manager I mean Clockwork Mod, for some reason I couldn't get it to work until I downloaded Boostrap, the Droid X selection wouldn't work on its own until Bootstrap was downloaded. So I installed Bootstrap then chose Droid X on the CWM menu, is this where I went wrong in regards to my nandroid backup?

Possibly. The proper method on the the Milestone X version is to be using the Droid 2 Bootstrap. If you payed for the Droid X Bootstrap then you don't have to repay for Droid 2. Just install it (either one) go in and choose "Bootstrap Recovery" wait for the "Success!" popup, then go to ROM Manager, choose Update Clockworkmod, and choose Droid 2 version. Shouldn't have any issues from there. If your nandroid is aborting from previously it may have been a bad backup. I've been flashing 2nd-init ROMs on top of .604 for a couple weeks now with no qualms.

I was using Droid 2 bootstrap, originally I had Droid X and I couldn't get anything to work. So in CWM I don't chose anything from the phone menu, just bootstrap, success, CWM reboot into recovery and create backup? Could you suggest some good ROMs that are stable and not too buggy?

*EDIT* The sad thing is I had 2 backups, I made one myself and then backed up current ROM before flashing the new ROM and when trying to use either of them while in recovery they both failed.

I just created a new backup, this is what it says at the end...

Backing up system…
Backing up data…
Backing up .android_secure…
Backing up cache…
No sd-ext found. Skipping backup of sd-ext.
Generating md5 sum…
Backup complete!

What does it mean by no sd-ext found? Is this the source of my backup problems?

That means that you don't have apps installed on your SD card.

In regard to my none of my ROMs loading properly I came across this on the thread that supplied Liberty 3v2...

Boot in to CWM.
Wipe data/factory reset
Wipe cache partition
Wipe dalvik cache (under Advanced)
Format system (under Mounts and Storage)
then install the desired .zip.

I wasn't doing this, I was simply installing from SD in ROM Manager and doing their 2 suggested wipes pre-install. Could this be the root of my [Status 7] message and load failure of Liberty?

Usually no. What you usually should be doing at minimum when flashing a fresh ROM is a data/factory reset and cache wipe (that includes Dalvik, so don't miss that under Advanced). Formatting the /system is a good habit to get into when flashing ROMs because not all ROM devs will put that code in to the updater-script, and if it simply just flashes fresh on top of the existing system you will have major issues. However it shouldn't give you Status 7 errors, regardless. Also, since you were able to boot up into the stock blur-based ROMs without using the patched versions I am mighty confused, because that should have been causing panics and bootloader errors. Did you check the MD5 prior to flashing? Methinks it might be a bad download. I have flashed all the ROMs you have mentioned with no problems myself (texted them all prior to releasing them). What does it say on your "About Phone" when you are on the Milestone X version (before you flash)?

Usually not wiping data results in bootloops, not CWM Status errors.

I'm not 100% sure about the download and have no idea about how to check md5 or what it really is. I'm about to try to flash Vortex RC1 with the above wipes and see if it works. If it fails again at least this time I know how to sbf back to normal and start all over again haha.

*EDIT* Goose, I dl'd Liberty from a post you had in another thread, all I did was enter install from sd card through ROM manager did the 2 wipes it suggested pre-install then installed. I've been watching a lot of videos and everyone is installing apps directly from reboot through CWM. The Vortex I'm about to try is also from your post I mentioned previously.

Voila! It worked! I'm now running Vortex. This time I didn't do anything through ROM Manager other than use it to enter CWM. I then did all the wipes I mentioned earlier and installed from sd card. Ugh finally...
