Help HTC Completely Acting Up!

Jenski

Newbie
I purchased an HTC Wildfire S at around the end of Jan from Amazon.co.uk and have been over the moon with it.

... until today.

It all started this morning with an almost completely unresponsive top-button. As soon as the screen automatically shut off, that was it, there was no hope to revive it until it decided to spring into life. I lost my rag with it and left it to do its own thing.

Later I needed to use it, so had no choice but to start messing until it decided to listen to me. It had an absolute spaz-out and after 2 or 3 automatic reboots it started working absolutely fine, except for that thing it does where when you are in a call and when you take the phone down from your ear it usually switches the screen on so you can end the call - it stopped doing that, so I had to press the top button to switch the screen visibility on to end the call or switch speaker-phone on or off.

After switching off and on again a while later, it had another spaz-attack. I use Pansi SMS for my texts, or at least I did until it uninstalled itself upon this restart. I also used to use MixZing which seemed also strangely absent upon this restart, not to mention the app menu seemed shorter than I remember it. I suspect that this restart may have launched a roll-back to a restore point of sorts, which I didn't even know it could do! A lot of the things under the "downloaded apps" section of manage apps are now showing up as, for example "com.rovio.angrybirds," "com.mixzing.basic," "bbc.mobile.news.uk" etc instead of the actual app names. The restore point theory falls apart a bit though, considering that BBC News was one of the first apps I installed, but now seems to have gone, but a flashlight app that I installed in the last 48 hours still seems to be around.

Now it is intermittently having problems listening to me when I press the top button to switch the screen on and the thing where it does not pick up the phone movement in call.

I have Avast as my anti virus on the phone, and rest assured I have virus scanned this phones arse off, but it always comes up absolutely squeaky clean.

So, what should I do? Should I return the phone for a replacement? Is there anything I can do to fix this?

Edit: Please let me know if there is any information I can share to help diagnose this (and if it's a tricky bit of info to get to, please let me know how) Many thanks.

OK, it seems to be behaving better today, all apps are back, but there are still 2 main slight annoyances...

  • It is still doing that thing where it won't switch the screen back on when I move the phone to end a call. I have to press the top button to switch the screen on.
  • One thing I have noticed is when I do the following: say I've been using the phone for one of its many purposes. I press the top button to lock the screen. Say at that split second I need to unlock the screen as I've forgotten to do some urgent Googling my own name or checking up on my friends updating their facialbooks with the brand of feather duster they've just bought from the pound shop. I press the top button again to unlock the screen; the backlight for the bottom buttons springs into life, but I have to poke at the screen a bit to wake it up, which I've never had to do before.
I know they're minor things, but they are problems that seem to have sprung out of nowhere, hence my concern. This is such a new phone which has had such huge issues so suddenly. I look after my phone, and indeed all my tech very well, so I can't think of anything I would have done wrong.

Thank you for your time, I realise this might have been a bit of a tl;dr request.

I would have said you have a virus but...I guess maybe not.

How much space to you have left in your internal memory? I'm not rrally familiar with Amazon. Do they only sell brand new phones or did you buy a second-hand one?

hmm 19mb is not much but then it shouldn't make your phone go crazy.
Have you tried factory reset? Back up everything before you do that because it will delete everything

Yeah, I was hoping to not have to do that, but it seems like it's the only way. Problems like this only get worse, so best to nip it in the bud.
I'll keep this thread posted as to how I get on.
Thanks for your help.

The issue with your apps actually implies a potentially bad sd card. I would pull the sd card, and put it in a pc to test it. Couldn't hurt, right?

I've plugged my phone into my computers at home and work a few times now (both squeaky clean) and backed up things to the SD card and navigated and used files from the SD a few times now - in fact I am right now, so I don't believe this to be the problem. Out of wonder, which problem implies this is the case?

How can I back up my browser bookmarks and contacts without putting it all in the cloud or installing some dodgy looking software on PC? I'm ready to start trying the factory reset.

Many thanks.

Have put the SD Card in a reader and scanned it and tested out some general file browsing and it seems fine. :)

Please let me know about backing up.

I had a bad sd card do funky things to apps (and the phone in general) in the past.
As for backing up your bookmarks, I honestly don't know of any solutions that wouldn't involve the cloud or an app.

I'm not sure about backing up your bookmarks but the app 'MyBackup' is good. I used it when I wanted to back up my stuff before rooting my phone and it backed up everything I wanted. But since I didn't have any bookmarks, I'm not sure if it backs up that as well.
The only thing is that it's a cloud thing. It backs up in their server....I'm not sure if there is anything that doesn't use cloud

:mad::mad::mad::mad:

Fully restored to factory settings and the top button is more cantankerous than ever! Will keep like this for a few days, but if it doesn't change them I'm sending it back. Was pondering getting a Desire S anyway after this one, may happen sooner rather than later!

How do you al mean a "bad" SD card. Surely they don't have sectors in the same way that a hard drives do. What can cause a card to go bad? I really don't think that is the problem.

Any more ideas? The only Apps I have installed after reset are Avast and Skymap.

Thanks again.

Wow still a problem huh... one last thing I would say is to try a different SD card in your phone just to rule it out 100%. If that doesn't work, then I don't what else you can do. I think you should get it replaced.

:(

Oh people of this thread, why did I ever doubt you?

Fresh card has fixed the motion sensing in-call. However when I go to unlock the screen, the bottom softkeys light up, but the screen doesn't some on until I poke it in order to pull the ring to unlock it. Still fairly instant, but is it normal? Better than before, anyway. Also, because I did the factory reset at work in my lunch break, my home WIFI was not on there until this morning, but the phone did not notify me to say there was a network available until I went into the Wireless settings and picked it up from there. Both are WPA networks with a passkey. Again, normal?

Sad thing is that the backup of texts did not save my drafts, and that's where I kept a multitude of jokes. So please, let's lighten this thread a bit. All donations welcome, lol.

Thanks ever so much for all the help, and sorry for doubting you all! We still cool? :):)

O M G. :mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:
Not even 2 hours after my last post the problems are back with a vengeance!

I don't have any more spare SD cards now either. Would formatting my other one work to make it not bad? The following are my apps that I have installed (no Particular order):

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.intellectualflame.ledflashlight.washer
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5tZXJyaWFtd2Vic3RlciJd
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...DEsImNvbS5nb29nbGUuYW5kcm9pZC5zdGFyZHJvaWQiXQ..
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...NvbS5hdmFzdC5hbmRyb2lkLm1vYmlsZXNlY3VyaXR5Il0.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...android.apps.androidify&feature=search_result
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...sMSwxLDEsImNvbS5lc3Ryb25ncy5hbmRyb2lkLnBvcCJd
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5mc2NrLms5Il0.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.sickipedia&feature=search_result
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.zdworks.android.toolbox&feature=search_result
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5taXh6aW5nLmJhc2ljIl0.

I suppose it's now fairly obvious that one of the apps is the problem. Personally, I suspect Mixzing or ZD Box as they were the two significant installs before the problems started, and now they are back, so are the problems.

So what now? Can I format my other SD card to make it not-bad? I'm totally at my wits end now!!

Thanks again.

Edit: Thought I'd try taking the SD card out completely for a lark. Haven't uninstalled any apps. Seems to be working fine now. I obviously can't go around without an SD card, otherwise I'd have dug out my old Nokia 3210 </exaggeration>. So what do? Could I have downloaded an image file that's making trouble? Other than the files created by apps themselves the only culprits could be either music files I've put on the card or images I have downloaded whilst browsing. How can I avoid it in the future? What next?

You jinxed it!!! You never should have posted about the fact it was working!! hehe just joking...No idea what else to suggest now..

About the wifi, I've never received any notification that a wifi is available...it used to happen to you?

I'm not sure about the apps I mean they do look quite safe apps to me since quite a few of them are using it ...But I don't have them on my phone so I guess I wouldn't know. How about trying to uninstalling them and rebooting the phone to see what happens?

I know, I totally did jinx it! Hehe
Bit of an update, I posted this on the other forum, can't see any other way now before going down the returning it route...

"Was told on the other thread that the SD card could be causing the problem, so tried a different one. This worked and was going fine until I started copying my data over and installing apps; so I took the SD card out and tried it. It now runs like a dream, but I have no SD Card. I therefore suspect that some file on the SD card had gone awry, possibly a music file or a downloaded image. I don't have any more spare SD cards, so I'll have to start formatting and such.
I have nothing to lose on this phone as everything was backed up beforehand, so I'll reformat a backed up card, pop it in, not transfer any data over other than contacts and text backups, then try your pacing myself app testing method (he suggested putting an app on a day and seeing of there were any adverse effects each time), just to rule apps out. Sound like a plan?"

Then I can similarly investigate the files on the card to see if any of them have a problem.

Thank you so much for all your help :):)

Looks like brotherswing was right after all!!
good luck with that! Wildfire s is a pretty cool. it would have been a shame for you to change it. That's just my opinion :D

I knew it was bad data on the card, I just figured the card itself had caused the corruption. Either way, trial and error will help you isolate the bad data. Glad you've got a battle plan. ;)

I have a very similar problem and this is the first thread that has sounded similar and has solved the problem.

I get the problem when I first 'wake up' the phone from a bit of inactivity. For example when I unlock the phone I press the top button, pull the ring up and then try to put in my passcode. The screen freezes for a few long seconds and then starts responding like normal. Now I don't have a passcode the normal screen freezes along with the bottom 4 buttons for a few seconds again. Even when I am on the phone I have problems. If I start a call and try to put it on loudspeaker, it doesn't respond for a while. Same when I try to end a call resulting in a few odd voicemail messages.

As Jenski seemed to have solved the problem, it would be great if the basic steps could be explained to me please. I read above something about apps and bad data. What does this mean?

Usually the culprit is a chunk of bad data hanging out, or a poorly written app. The best way to clear it up involves a factory reset. You can use SMS Backup and Restore from the market to save your text messages, then do a factory reset from the privacy menu. Yes, you will lose your data. Then put your sd card in a pc (preferably in a card reader) copy all your data to the pc. Use the pc to format the card (thus clearing junk data) then copy your files back to the sd card. Put the sd card back in the phone, and restart the phone. After it finishes booting up, sign in to your Google account then download SMS Backup and Restore to restore your text messages. Also, if you're rooted, you can use Titanium Backup to backup and restore your apps much like the texts. This is an involved solution, but it will work. If you go through this and still have problems then there is a hardware problem.

It all seems to be sorted. I deleted a load of data but nothing much happened and then a friend found the SD card (had the phone for 11 months and never knew where it was) so I took it out, put it back in again and it's fine now.

Thanks for the help brotherswing.
