Help Alarm when No Service

I was recently in a location with no service and the alarm feature would not work. When I was in the no service area it gave me a message to check my connection. Why does the alarm require the phone to be in a location that has cell phone service in order to work? Anyone know how to get the alarm to work even in a no service area or an acceptable replacement alarm program? Thanks.

What app are you currently using to provide you with a notification of NO Service ?
