It honestly varies from phone to phone. Franco's kernel is well respected, and for some people it makes their phone fly. In my case, though, my phone doesn't like it for some reason, and I can just sit here and watch my battery drop.
My personal choice is leankernel, usually the newest update. I feel like it's plenty fast and I get killer battery life on it. It also has tons of tweaks for speed and preferences.
My best advice is to just try a few and see how they do. It's not really hard/a big deal to flash a kernel, so you can go wild.
