Root Hord of Rooting threads.

Thanks guys I managed fine when I got back last night with no further hitches.
Seems to have gone well although it hasn't fixed my Desire's crappy memory management - before the flash I had <15Mb space... now I have ~25 with all my apps reinstalled. I'm sure I read somewhere about someone else with a Desire having exactly the same problem after flashing dGB so I'll not hog this thread any longer and go hunt down the fix myself.

Again, many thanks everyone for your help. :thumb:

Dgb requires* a smaller hboot to be used to its fullest.

*it doesn't use a2sd, instead its a tiny rom so you can use your internal memory which if you changed your HBOOT, would infact be more then standard, depending on your hboot.

Did you enable a2sd and a ext3/4 partition?

You now have a new, smaller rom, but the /system partition in your phone's internal memory is still the same size it needed to be for the HTC stock rom, which is 250MB. You can shrink this partition down to 60MB and you would instantly gain 190MB of space for installing apps!

Check out SUroot's guide in the stickies:

http://androidforums.com/desire-all-things-root/220627-faq-root-memory-a2sd-partitions-updated-10th-august-2011-a.html

Read the second section on Alpharev partition tables.

EDIT: Instead of using one of the partition tables available from Alpharev website, use SUroot's special dGB table available from his minisite as the partition sizes are optimized for the dGB rom:

Ah ok I get it.

I've followed that FAQ before.... and got stuck again :D (I have a lovely bootable USB stick but I got stuck with what to do next :D) but I'll have another crack at it and perhaps it will sink in now I'm gaining a better understanding.

I'm not coming out of this looking very good am I. I speak 3 different languages and play various musical instruments (arguably another type of language) but I haven't got a scooby-doo what you rooting guys are talking about. :D
I've had that page open on my lappy for a couple of days now... I don't see anything that mentions tables. Is it one of those Hboot thingies? :o :D

lol. yeah one of those Hboot thingies. Don't worry, it can be confusing at first when things are referred to with different names. That is the image file you will use to flash the hboot, defining the partition table.

Don't worry, mate!

The learning curve is quite steep, but think of the sweet rewards! It took me weeks of reading guides, faqs and forum threads before I had any clue as to what this was all about. This thread helped me too.

Keep at it, though, you'll get there!

Cheers mate. That link cleared up a lot of what was confusing me.
