[Official] Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE Pre-release thread - Sprint official launch is Saturday, June 2

For what it's worth I was just on the phone with a Sprint Customer Service rep and she said that while 18 May is still listed as the "official" date for the rollout that they are hearing that it may bump out to the 27th which is an odd date because it's a Sunday.

iOS tends to be a storage hog, Android is definitely a cpu hog (and it certainly doesn't hate having more RAM).

That said, ICS uses the newer Linux revision 3 kernel and this phone has a lot of horsepower under the hood.

It's too soon to say if this is the ongoing complaint many have had against Android, or if this is being caused by Sense 4 - or an immature kernel not using the S4 properly.

I say this because I'm seeing a lot of Sense reboots complaints in the One X thread - and also because the first firmware of the One X was rather laggy.

So - I think you're talking about the end-user experience as shipped - and I agree with you, lag is unacceptable.

The preponderance of posts from rooters and Nexus owners prove that the blog-reported issues can be overcome - either through bloatware removal, rom replacements, configuration changes, what have you.

So, it may be tangential to your point or direct to your point, not sure, but the fault isn't necessarily Android per se - it's how it's being shipped to us as end-users.

Also, I think it's more than worth noting that by now, we all know that phones seem to ship with every useless feature turned on, and that can often affect users actual results.

In any case, my point - ICS is a big generational leap - our first major revision to Android in a few years, and Sense 4 is another generational leap.

I think the lags and Sense reboots show what happens when two big leaps are made at once.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to adopt EL TEvo early and wait for performance updates. Should you or any member of the Mission LTEvo Force be caught or killed, the State Department will disavow any knowledge of your actions.

Good luck, Mr. Phelps!

Sir we have a question about the last part. The get caught or killed part...what if we get caught killing a fellow member of the force?:dontknow::confused::eek::p

What the phone? I bet if you call back you will get another answer.

Don't waste your time with Sprint customer reps, there clueless and make these outlandish claims! I had bet a Sprint manager (works in the store!) that the phone would release on the 18th, she insisted on a June release! We know who all won that bet...credit on my account!

P.s.....I know her! Don't try this at home! Lol....I'm serious!;)

I just got that e-mail also. It looks to me like it's just a tease... It gives no indication of when it is actually shipping and the cs rep I spoke to a couple of days ago said that my order was already processed.

I really wouldn't hold my breath for delivery until the 16th-17th...

I think the thing to notice in this email is what came AFTER what people have posted here, namely:

"Customize your new phone with all the latest accessories. Shop now".

Rather than giving us a clue the phone might ship early, I think it was merely a sales pitch to sell accessories while you're still a hot lead.

Still, it was a nice confirmation that they have me "in the system" for pre-orders and that shipping notification. :)

Welcome to the forums! :)

Questions like this can only be answered once the phone is out.

That said, my Evo never froze up on me, I never once missed a call, so I'm not clear what particular "freezing problems" you're referring to.
I think i have heard people refer to the problem as "power cycling"? On the Sprint community forum many were refering to it as a "freezing problem".

Basically, the phone is unresponsive to calls. When you click the standby button to use the evo, either it will be completely unresponsive or the HTC startup screen comes up. When it is unresponsive you have to take out the battery and put it back in before you can turn on the phone again. When the HTC screen comes up, it just basically restarts. From the time that the phone falls into this unresponsive mode to the time that you get your phone back up, you miss calls with no record of the phone calls in your call history. Only voicemails or texts. Just as if you had turned your phone off.

While waiting in line at my sprint store, many times, there was often 1 or 2 other people waiting to speak with a rep for the same reason. I thought maybe it was a little more well known problem. Maybe something new about this phone would prevent it..?

Thank you for moving my thread/post to the correct place. I think I will just wait until it has been out for a few months.

I just pre-ordered my LTEVO. I hope it is considerably better than my Samsung Instinct and for quick deployment in San Diego. :)

Though I haven't ordered my LTEvo yet, as a fellow San Diego resident I'm hoping for a quick deployment as well. I will say that based on SD actually being on the list of cities to get LTE(Phase 2 rollout) I'm more hopefully as we never appeared on a list for 4G that I'm aware of.

I hear ya!.. keep in mind, Clear's WiMax was probably never planned to be deployed on the scale Sprint's Network Vision and LTE are. Network Vision is planned to go to 99.9% of Sprints 38,000+ towers. Essentially making a complete nationwide LTE network. If you think about it, Since NV involves replacing every component at each cell site (minus the actual tower)... Sprint is rebuilding the entire network in just over 2 years... Its quite an impressive feat!

I was a bit surprised when I stopped by the Best Buy near my home and, while looking at their display phones, picked up the phone that was labeled "AT&T HTC One X" only to turn it over and discover it was an LTEvo! This was after a rep had, only minutes earlier, told me they probably wouldn't have a display model until the 18th. I walked over and told that same rep(who was standing next to another rep if he knew they actually did have a display model. He said no they didn't as all 3 of us walked over to the "AT&T HTC One X". I picked up the phone and as I said "I promise you this is an LTEvo because no other phone has a red kickstand" and I flipped the phone over. The 2nd rep began to tell me I was wrong and then looked down at the phone and stopped mid-sentence and had this look of disbelief on his face and then just said "wow". He then told me his department manager, who apparently put the display phones out, didn't know they had an LTEvo display model in the store. They even had a display location sitting empty waiting for an LTEvo to mount there. The whole thing was pretty weird considering that I've had 5 different Sprint reps as well as 2 previous BB reps tell me they would probably or defiantly not have display models until the rollout date. I am wondering if that display model(which was obviously not a working model as none of the buttons could be depressed) was accidentally sent to that store.

Have any of you seen any LTEvo's in your stores yet?

:)

Seriously though, take a shot of it out in the wild for us!

Regardless of who has what, how did the phone look and feel to you? What were your general impressions on it?

With the exception of the big display mount for the tether attached to the back of the phone it felt good. I would prefer that the entire back of the phone have the same material as the lower half but I'm not hung up on the esthetics of my phones as some people are. As long as it functions great and isn't ugly, which this phone certainly isn't, I'm a happy camper. I was disappointed that I couldn't deploy the kickstand though.

I would have liked to have been able to feel how the camera button feels to depress but as I said it's a display model and none of the buttons moves.

I was also to see exactly where the charging cable will be if I'm talking on the phone while charging. My thought on that is I wish the port was on the other side of the phone from where it's at just because I usually talk with the phone in my right hand which means the cable is facing towards mt front rather than the more comfortable location to the rear if I'm holding it in my left hand while talking & charging.

I was happy to be able to see that the rear camera lens is indeed recessed.

All in all it looks like a great phone but as I said the functions of the phone are most important to me and those I couldn't explore.

Nice find! Sounds like that store made a mistake and put the display out early. Question: was it a real, live phone, or a hollowed out "dummy" phone?

Seemed like a "dummy" phone only because the volume rocker, power & camera buttons didn't depress. It was near impossible to judge the weight of the phone with the display tether apparatus attached to the phone.

Does anyone know how the screen will compare to my MoPho? I love how easy it is to see and read the screen, as well as look at pictures in sunlight on my MoPho.

Thanks
