Help Black Screen: What to check before ordering a replacement screen?

Pretty sure it's not software related because the phone was fine when I set it down and when I picked it up, nothing. I attempted a battery pull and nothing. The phone will give the quick vibrate when I power it up so I know it's got power and is powering normally and then the four buttons on the bottom of the screen will light up too. If it were software it would likely light up and then go black when the OS starts to boot. This sucker is just black from the get go. I pulled the battery and held the power button for 5 seconds then let the phone set for several minutes and still no change.

What are some common things to look for?

I have the phone taken apart and it looks fine and the ribbon cable appears to be connected solidly. At this point I'm pretty sure the display just went out but I was wondering if there's anything else I should check while I'm in here that others have had luck with before I place an order for a new screen. Being w/o my screen for several days is going to be a REAL PITA so I'm hoping there's something I didn't yet think of that will resolve this w/o waiting for a shipment.

Thanks for the link but no way in heck would I use those people based on what I read. Besides, they want $50 for the LCD and I just called my local Sprint and they want only $35 to replace it... parts and labor. Looks like I'm headed down to the Sprint store so hopefully all goes well. I would replace it myself (already have the phone in pieces) but I can't afford to wait a week for a screen to ship so the extra $10 or so to have it done today is money well spent for me. Hopefully this holds on now until the HTC One X or SGN3 comes out.

Well you wouldnt buy the LCD from them, you would just use their guide to do it yourself.

For $35, I'd probably just let sprint handle it though.

I don't really need a guide as I was a level 3 Nokia Technician in a former life. I checked the usual stuff like connections and such but I was more curious if there was a trend of something specific on the Evo 4G that I should look for or try. For $35 to have them do it it's not even worth trouble shooting any further than what I've done already though. I've got the phone buttoned back up and I'm headed out the door to take it to Sprint with my $35 to have fixed. I wasn't expecting it to cost so little so I'm MORE than happy to pay that and be done with it and hopefully limp my phone alone until the new phones come out. It's served me quite well before now so I have no real reason to replace it but if the new phones are as good as they appear I may be convinced. I had the original Droid forever before finally getting an Evo 4G so I have no problem rocking this device for years to come if it stays working.

Yeah, that's the one I was looking at. The thing is AMAZING! So smooth and fast. The display is glorious too. I love the size, shape and weight of it too. The one thing I don't like that may be a deal breaker for me is the fact that it does NOT have a user replaceable battery. I carry two spare batteries that are charged and ready to go and swap them out regularly as needed during the day and am not sure I can make due with just keeping it charged all the time. My lifestyle doesn't always lend to being able to plug the phone in. I guess I'll have to see if I can live with that because the phone is amazing otherwise.

Got my phone fixed today and $35 was a bargain. They even replaced the trim that surrounds the screen as well as the digitizer so my phone basically looks new now. It would be a great time to sell it to upgrade since it looks so clean and all four of my corners are there now! For those who use a Evo 4G a lot I'm sure you know what I'm talking about since the corners tend to break into chunks and disappear over time. Glad to have my phone back but now I realize how crappy it is compared to the 4G LTE version. Kind of like how I felt after playing with an Evo 4G after having owned a Droid for so long. I made the upgrade not too long after so this could be the same thing all over again.
