Root Is root not needed for new leak?

Hello,

I was reading about the new leak and, after being really frustrated that the OTA didn't arrive on May 9th as expected/hoped, I'm interested in trying the latest leak with the new radio, etc.

My couple of questions are, am I correct that root isn't needed to update to the leak? I'm sure that once I go to the leak, there's no going back, which I'm less concerned about. But my next question is, can I take the OTA if I'm running the leak since the OTA (whenever it finally arrives) is likely to have a higher version number?

If there are any reason that I don't know of that I shouldn't take the leak, please let me know.

(sorry I put this in root area but since I didn't know if root is necessary, it seemed the only reasonable option).

Root is not needed but your bootloader must be locked. If you haven't unlocked it, you're good to go! I installed it on Friday and like it.

as was said,root is not needed,and you must relock to run the RUU.

you cannot go back to GB firmware,and you likely WILL NOT recive the OTA,because of how the updater scripts work(they search for official release build numbers. of wich the leak is not)

i personally would stay on GB firmware with an s-on phone until ICS is officically pushed to phones.

simply flash an ICS custom rom if you want a taste. there is a competely stock,rooted version,and there are others based on it. all thats needed is to falsh an "old firmware" patch right after flashing the rom.

its not permanent,and you can restore your GB backup if you wish to recive the OTA,or just want to go back to GB.

I'm currently not rooted but probably wouldn't want to root w/o doing the s-off procedure just for the "Locked" status instead of "Relocked" not for any of the features. In fact, I'd probably rather S-on again after I had it saying locked again! But it sounds like you're saying none of that is worth it till we at least get the OTA and then go from there?

In the meantime, is there anyway to limit the VZW bloatware w/o rooting or doing something major that would mess up the OTA?

Is there any word on a new date for the OTA or do we care since the first few were wrong? I really want my phone and tab to be on the same OS version so I'm looking forward to ICS so much.

well,yes and no. i do not think its really worth the effort to run the RUU for the leak on a stock phone,as you are stuck there,and will likely have to manually update to the official release via the same method,since the leaked rom will not trigger the OTA.

i do think its worth the efort to root and run ICS roms,especially if youre willing to go s-off,as that will not only get your hboot back to reading locked but will give you the freedom and flexibility to flash leaks without fear of being stuck on them. with s-off,you can always downgrade back to an older official build- software AND firmware.

even if you dont want to s-off,you can run some ics roms,then when the OTA is being pushed,you can restore your stock backup,and recieve the OTA normally. you could wait to do the s-off process until a time that you needed to turn your phone in. it is possible to get the phone back to completely stock,s-on,locked if you need it to be.

unfortunately,no. there are no working temp root exploits right now that work. youre stuck with vzw bloat unless you want to unlock and root.

not that i have heard. i venture to guess it will prolly be a couple months. the latest leak is pretty good,tho i think there are prolly still some small issues that need addressed. each time htc submits something to vzw,vzw has x amount of weeks to test,and either accept or send it back. if they send it back,htc has x amount of weeks to fix. that said,its potentially 2-3 months each time this happens,and it will happen over and over until a build is accepted. thats why it takes so long to get them out.
