Forcing Apps to install to the SD Card without root

Hello i'm not sure if this has been mentioned but on step 4. when i enter in my case (D:/sdk-tools/adb devices) the command screen opens but closes straight away within a second?

I carried on with the process skipping the serial number part and it worked! so thanks a lot although a way to move contacts storage to the SD would be great as mine takes up 25mb due to facebook contacts etc. Thanks!
Adam

i tried this process succesfully but now i am not able to use internet even though it connects with my wifi? what is happening....

i have htc wildire s and i have updated htc sync . i run cmd as admin.... i follow the tips . they said ... cannot find the path specified . sorry for my bad english !!

Very helpful post. I gained about an extra 20Mb of space which is extremely valuable. For those who cannot or do not want to root - this is an invaluable tip.

Many thanks.

Where did you extract the Mini SDK too?

No problem, glad it helped! :)

whenever i type adb devices it says "adb is not recognized as an internal or external device, operable program or batch file" why is that?

how do i know if my phone has HTC sync..i am really a noob when it comes to technology, so i really don't know anything. please help?

Welcome to AF android991! :)

Are you typing adb devices in the correct folder via the command prompt? Try:

1. cd\sdk-tools\sdk-tools
2. adb devices

See if it picks it up then.

Thank you, this tutorial is a life saver for HTC Wildfire S users! :)

I was already started to think about changing the phone... But with this awesome tip, I managed to free up 20mb of internal memory, and now my phone is working great.

though not the default apps but very vital space has been saved....u rock brother....cheers!!!i was able to move adv task killer...easy installer etc etc to sd card yipee!!!thanxa ton

I followed ur instructions exactly and it all work but now all the shortcuts on my phone no longer work:confused: and i cn nt access most of the apps.

I will now have to reinstall Andriod ...any ideas what went wrong:(?

Thank you for replying

I have since my last post discovered that the apps are no longer even on my phone they have been delete ..BUT the internal memory has not changed which leads me to believe that the apps are

Run through the process again, but this time, use 0 instead of 2 as your install location. Make sense? That will let the app decide the best place to install itself.

Does your SD Card definitely work?

Yes SD card definitly works I have music and pictures on it.

Ok i will trying using the 0 instead and get back to you.

Thanks

No probs. :)

All 0 will do is revert the phone back to default settings so we can get your phone back to a usable state, then try and work out what went wrong.

The phone has since starting working again, I didn't do anything just after a while all the shortcuts for the apps appeared and worked.

The internal memory has not changed tho still 19mb free and apps like Facebook and Maps cannot be moved the SD card the button is greyed out.

Any idea on what has happened and why the internal memory is still very low?

Thanks

My phone prompted for a update to the operating system recent which I did.

I am now running Android 2.3.5 on my Wildfire.

Do I need to repeat this process to ensure apps are installed to the SD card?

Thanks.

Need help.....

I have downlaoded SDK and HTC Sync, done the ABD stuff but still getting 'Insufficient storage' message when I've downlaoded apps. I am using an 8gb sd card with 6gb available.
According to my storage, I have 12mb available in internal storage but still can't download a 3mb app!

Any suggestions?

One of the biggest complaints levelled at the HTC Wildfire S is the severe lack of internal memory. There are ways around this, one of which is forcing downloaded apps to install to the SD Card. There are a couple of pre-requisites, but the process itself is relatively straight forward. :)

You'll need HTC Sync installed (or at least the drivers that come with HTC Sync) and ADB (Android Debug Bridge) or the Android SDK. The SDK itself is a >100MB download and can be relatively difficult to install, however if you head here, look under the section entitled Mini SDK, click show, you can download a zip file called SDK-Tools.zip. Once downloaded, extract the contents of that folder to a folder of your choosing. I recommend somewhere easy, like C:\SDK-Tools as you'll need to navigate to it via a command prompt later.

You'll also need to enable USB Debugging on your phone, that's easily enough done by heading to Settings -> Applications -> Development -> USB Debugging. You'll get a warning message, but just ok that you'll be fine.

Once you've done all the above, the process is as follows:

1. Connect the Phone to the PC in Charge Only mode
2. Open a command prompt (Start -> Run -> CMD, you'll need to run as Administrator)
3. Navigate to the folder you extracted ADB to. In my case, the command would be "cd\SDK-Tools" (minus the quotes).
4. Type adb devices and press enter. You should then see the serial number of your phone displayed on screen. If you don't check, that USB Debugging is enabled and you're connected in Charge Only Mode.
5. Type adb shell, press enter.
6. Type pm setInstallLocation 2 press enter (it's important you enter this exactly as written as it's case sensitive)
7. Type Exit, then disconnect your phone.
8. PROFIT! :)

You can now move apps that are already on the handset to the SD Card. Head to Settings -> Applications -> Manage Applications -> All -> Click an app -> Move to SD Card. All new apps will install to the SD Card.

It's worth mentioning that apps with active widgets cannot be moved and a certain portion app will remain on the phones data partition, but this goes a long way to assist with the lack of internal memory!

Hi, I finished the process without any errors but I can't move any apps to sd and I also tryed to install an app and it installed to phone. The "move to SD" button is grayed out. What I can do? My phone is not rooted and I use Android 2.3.5.

Here is a game i downloaded from Play store and it can't be moved to SD.
