Strange status icon

Ok...at the risk of "Did you try Google" or searching (which I have done)...a strange icon showed up on my status portion of my Eris just now. I cannot find it in any of the icon glossaries in the manual or anywhere in google.

My best description of it is this...sorry no screen shot.
an over the ear earpiece with sound waves to the right of it. The obvious answer is that is is simply showing some earpiece in use, but alas I have none.

This isn't in the notification area, so the dropdown shows nothing of note regarding this.

Nope...not GPS on.....let me see about a screen shot. I've looked through the list. Trust me, it's been hammered into my brain not to post something before looking around. : )

and it's on the right, just left of the "Location" icon (edited to answer two questions)

That is the 2.1 icon for hearing aids. Go to Settings/Call to disable. It is not in the user manual because it is new for 2.1.

Good job! Just did an exhaustive search of the web to find nothing...how did you find it?

Earpiece volume should be a lot clearer with it off... to distorted while on.

I actually saw the icon from the SDK package on an unsuccessful attempt to root a while ago.

Off topic but does anyone know what the thingamajig is to the left of the earpiece? Right where the headphone jack is? It almost looks like a front panel camera, they even cut out space for it on the screen protector I use.

I've been wondering this for the longest...

No need to Google when you can come here and get a direct, personalized answer to your question.

Sometimes it'll take a bit more time than doing an internet search, but the element of person-to-person contact in a community like this one full of people with the same device (or type of device: Android) is heads above a page full of Google links, in my opinion.

Thanks for the fix. I had the same icon show up 2 days ago and was driving me nuts. support team members had no idea. Now its gone !!!!
