Motorola Droid 2.1 Details- Official from Verizon's Support Page

Maybe an odd question, but are there any compatibility issues with 3rd party apps when moving from 2.0.1 to 2.1? I've got a lot of data set up (checkbook, lists, databases, etc.) that I depend on, and if I have to wait around for an updated app to hit the market to use it again, I could become... annoyed.

Should be no problems. It's only when you have an older firmware that it's an issue (ie: 1.5). It's rare when any OS is not backwards compatible (could certainly be wrong there).
 
This is all becoming such a joke. First they post a pdf saying there upgrading. Now from an upgrade it goes to a small number of test users.
Just where does this bogus information come from anyway? This pure BS.

Not sure where these rumors start. They are doing absolutely nothing new. This is EXACTLY what happened last update. The network is freaking huge and there are way too many people to update in one night, expecially untested. So the first night will have the fewest people in the update batch. If all goes well, then they'll increase the number for the next batch (most likely 2 days later).

Maybe you will be a lucky one of the test users that gets his phone bricked. Do you really think they would just spray out a update to millions of users without testing it on a few thousand first? Have a little Patience my friend.
 
Yup,smh too bout the 3 screens...really??who can actually put everything they want on 3 screens?impressive feat if someone has done this lol.its good to see that they're about to make it official but it really doesnt matter to me at this point.im running simply stunning's latest version and thats a bag of chips and then some.lookin forward to froyo custom roms now :D

BTW for all those not rooted yet,if your still on the fence about it you might wanna make up your mind soon.Upgrade with the OTA and only the xda GODs will kno when you'll have the opportunity to run custom again.hopefully immediately but im not banking it considering how well the Eris was locked down(just a couple of days ago got root access,riDONKculous)(waiting on the ridicule for the use of the word...BRING IT ON!!:eek:

I use only 3 screens just fine and prefer 3 to 5 or 7 but i can understand why people would want more and it makes no sense they arent extending it to 5.

you emphasized "2" .. i dont see a helix launcher 2 on the market, or am i missing something? it mentions it on the helix launcher download page though.

also - is it easy enough to switch between launchers (stock and helix)? will it 'save' your homescreen setup on each launcher or once u switch you lose everything?

You can switch between the two by changing the default home app, but you'll need to reconfigure your home screens every time you use a different launcher. What you change on one has no bearing on the other. It's like this for all home screen replacements.
 
The different launcher's will not share any shortcuts or widgets or anything. You can switch back and forth and not lose the last configuration though, so at least once you set them up you can switch back and forth and lose nothing.
 
hmm i wonder if they could set it up so you can has 2 helix launchers, and then you could have 2 launchers + 7 screens each + different configurations = 14 screens of goodies i like the idea lol, alot of screens though
 
i went to verizon today to get some accessories for my droid,

and i asked the rep if i could exchange my phone for another phone (was thinking about the nexus one when it comes out) if its on insurance. so i made up a bs excuse why id trade my phone in, and she said "well why dont you wait for a few days because there is an update coming this week for the droid"

i know i know...never believe the verizon rep, but she was a new girl, and uses a blackberry so im guessing she might have spilt the beans :P

The Helix Launcher is an app that you have to download from the Market so you cannot have two instances of it running at once. You could, though, have another Launcher replacement like Launcher++ or Home++ running with icons and widgets on each one, switching between them when you like. This is not advised, though, as it can cause slowness in your Droid.
 
hes saying that based on the tester version they sent out. no one knows what the OFFICIAL version will have. Not until 9 this morning at least and as soon as some one gets it it will be on you tube. and then some one will make an update.zip file

It is based on the ESE53 build that we got a couple weeks ago, I promise you that. Just look on the update information document on Verizon's Support site, it even says that it's ESE53 based. Also, the update already comes as an update.zip file, nobody has to make it, they just have to save it to their computer and share the file with us (see my OP)...

Gah I know it's killing me. I'm really really bummed about the no 5 homescreens. I have my 3 pretty much filled....

I mean the Beautiful Weather Widgets takes up 2 rows itself, the main screen pretty much everything is left as it was out of the box but ATK, Dolphin browser, facebook and Handcent fill the rest of that up. Then the third screen I've got the beautiful Widgets power bar for wifi, bluetooth, gps etc and a battery widget and clock :L I'm hoping 5 screens may come in ANOTHER update lol

The good news is, as time goes on we will have more and more home-replacement apps available, and they will become more stable.

I currently use Sweeter Home Preview 2. And while it is not the easiest app to learn or to live with sometimes, my 3 homescreens act like 12 of the typical homescreens on a stock DROID.
