Root TUTORIAL: Setup Wifi Tethering

One more thing Grd, how much faster is the speed when you WiFi tether compared to regular tethering with an application and using USB?

Well, PDANet connects at 2.4mbps I believe. I just ran this Speedtest using wifi:

So I guess it's a LITTLE faster, although both tests I ran had a rather high ping time.

What if I want to share my wi-fi connection with another device, like an iPod touch, or another Eris that is just using WiFi (like my gf's Cricket eris that just has Web Only mobile network)?

Is this possible?

Does your Eris appear like a Wi-Fi hotspot that only one connection can be made to?

It only supports adhoc mode, not infrastructure. Only one device can connect. This is a limitation of the hardware.

But yes, your phone will appear as a wireless network that you can connect to with a computer, ipod, etc.

I am very new to all of this linux stuff so please bear with me here.

Is there any disadvantage of doing this the easy way you listed first?

You may just want to hold off on this now. With the progress made yesterday, a new rooted rom will be available and a lot of these steps will be already built into the new rom.

So the WEP encryption doesn't work on this correctly for me. I will hold off using it until then.

This app doesn't work for me, I've included the bug report I created but perhaps one of you can help me figure it out?

Which device (manufacturer, type)?
HTC Eris with Verizon
Which firmware is installed?
eris_0_2.zip
What version of wireless tether are you using?
2.0-pre8
What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Launch android-wifi-tether
2. Press to start tethering
3. Message pops up: "Tethering started with errors! Please check 'show log'."
4. Log contains:
"Loading wlan.ko module...
done
Configuring WiFi interface...
done
Activating WiFi interface...
failed
Enabling NAT rules...
done
Enabling IP forwarding...
done
Tethering now running...
done"

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Expected: Activating WiFi interface... done
I saw instead: Activating WiFi interface... failed

The access point appears when I scan for it with my laptop, but I can't make a connection to it.

we figured this one out a few hours ago... tether looks of ifconfig in teh wrong place... so create a symlink for it...

in adb shell as root:

ln -s /system/xbin/ifconfig /system/bin/ifconfig

then try it out :)

thanks! I should have checked back here sooner, grdlock helped me with this a few mins ago on irc, but I really appreciate your help thegreathoe!

Still wondering if this is the best wifi tethering app for Rooted users? Any help would be appreciated!

I get everything 'done' except the third one

Activating WiFi Interface...
failed

When I hit Menu > Log

Going to reboot, then try with WiFi actually TURNED ON.

mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
ln -s /system/bin/xbin/ifconfig /system/bin/ifconfig

That should get it goin. This is fixed in eris_0_3.zip btw.

So how do I install or tether wirelessly via wifi for my laptop?

.. this is the main reason I rooted besides the nav and all the other little bells and whisltes.

I'm using the last file listed in pkopalek's link. works great. How do I put a password on it so others can't jump onto my phone? Is it it one user at a time only? It lists in the menu the option to enable wifi-encryption and has a spot for a password, but when I use my pc to link to the connection it doesn't ask for me to enter any password. Any ideas?

I think i answered you in the PM but for others that aren't sure...

Use pkopalek's link. I downloaded the last file listed. mount your sd card to your computer. drag the file onto your sd card. Unmount. Use an app such as Astro to locate the file you just added. Click on it and install.
