Help Microsd card compatibility/formatting discussion

Just sharing my experience with 64GB card purchased from BUY.COM. Ordered this late Wed night and got it this morning (Sat). Nice price and free shipping too! Threw it in the phone, formatted, copied data over from 8GB card and confirmed it's working perfectly.

Nice snag! I got the same card from Buy.com for $59. I can confirm it's working perfectlt on my ELTEVO.

LOL...I actually got it when it was $70, which was a good deal at that time. Just shows you how things can change in a 2 month timeframe. I've already gotten the moneys worth out of it though.

I was just posting for those that didn't jump on the earlier price drop, but I agree. Great deal at $49.99, for those that didn't have one and were willing to get the deal this time around.

I don't mean to be a grammar nazi but... that packaging doesn't instill much confidence in me.
It's actually a very fast and reliable card, typos aside. Got it about for $27 shipped from Newegg about 5 months ago. This is what I'm giving up to go with the 64GB UH-1 class 10 Sandisk.

I've developed a MicroSD problem. I've been using a known good, Sandisk 64GB microSD card from a reputable retailer for ~9 months. The only thing I can trace this to was adding some files to the card yesterday and possibly the microSD to USB adapter breaking during write (Windows 7 showed the progress bar completed no issue)?

I added 6 game apk files at ~300MB total (humblebundle). They appeared to write to the card with no problem, however after reinserting the card back to the phone and powering on and mounting it up only one of the apks was physically there.

Now the adapter is not working (a known good 32GB card won't work with it - the drive partially shows up on my PC but as unmounted greyed out). I've used a microSD to SD card adapter and USB card reader, also can mount the phone as a disk drive. I'm able to view the drive and it appears I can add or delete files but every time I remount it, it reverts back to right before the files were added. I copied the files off successfully after this trouble arose and have a fully up to date working back up.

I've tried formatting in phone, and it appears to maybe work, but after remounting all the files are still there. Formatting with my PC appears to work - resets the capacity to 0, but once it is ejected and remounted, it shows the old configuration with all my files in tact. Even using the handy dandy PC formatting tool doesn't work. It will complete all format options, but none of them stick. Even Full Overwrite appeared to write to the whole volume of the disk successfully, but after remounting I'm back to where I was. I don

Wow, Pyro. You have me completely stumped. All the troubleshooting you did is exactly what I would've recommended. Sounds like a "real" tech needs to step in here and give you some guidance, cuz that is way over my head.

Basic troubleshooting is kind of second nature for us :)
I always try to get ideas from other good brains when I can. Even the best can overlook the simple things sometimes.

chkdsk showed no problems.
I'm thinking a low level format and rebuild is a bit of a ditch effort. Not sure where to turn for that though.

I am pretty bummed, as I feel this is still a fixable problem just with a unclear solution (I hate those! I like solving puzzles). I can access all the data, the disk mounts fine, shows all the correct system info and capacity, passes diagnostics, but still cannot format or write new data through any means.

I remember in the past hearing about Sandisk's great customer service so I dialed them up on my browser and used their web chat feature to contact them for what I was hoping would be some advanced troubleshooting ideas or the chance at a replacement.
I answered all their questions (most of which subtly tilted towards proving the card was not a counterfeit) followed their basic simple troubleshooting step of quick formatting using Windows 7. Which I had obviously tried, amongst other more in depth methods.
The representative quickly went into RMA mode without being prompted or having another troublesooting thought. I expressed my displeasure at the thought of sending off the card with all my sensitive phone data on it and the rep informed me I could drill a hole through it and return it via RMA. Which sealed the deal, so I'll be getting a new card at no cost soon.
Another positive experience backing up Sandisk's service.

In other news, when I was at work yesterday I hit my microSD to USB adapter with ye old can-o-air. It must have cleared dust/pocket lint from the inner contacts. Either that or the adapter works like a Nintendo cartridge and needed some aeration. Now the adapter is working again.
I'll probably be buying a new adapter since I feel unsure about the stability of this one I have.
It sounds kind of silly and obvious now after the fact (hindsight 20/20), but a word of warning to others; despite the adapter being convenient, small, and on a keychain, I would not recommend carrying it on your keys or in a pocket. It must be a real lint trap. This all may be coincidental but I hate imagining that dust possibly corrupted my file transfer and ruined my microSD card.

Have you tried this?

There are articles floating around on why you may get poor results formatting a 64GB card in a phone, not sure where to look right now though.

Certainly.
That is the "handy dandy PC formatting tool" I mention in post 119.
You remember me right? :p
I gave out this link in post 82 of this thread. I've been one of the biggest proponents of this tool for years. I can't even count how many times I've recommended it.

It's clearly haunted. I highly doubt naming a folder 'android' would interfere with other folders with that name or somehow null the format process. You need a priest and some holy water.

:D

Trying out Tapatalk, skimmed the thread, missed that, sorry. I'm in the same boat, always recommending that, lol.

Might have been some ESD damage in handling, not sure what else to suggest.

Update
I received my replacement MicroSD card from SanDisk yesterday. It appears to be a equivalent card, brand new without the retail package. It came with the clamshell plastic case and a MicroSD -> SD card adapter (Now I've got 3 of them and no use as I don't use a all in one card reader! :(). I wish it had come with microSD->USB adapter instead as it is much more useful in any situation. I should have ordered one online a bit ago that came in a pack with a microSD card for like $20. It would have been a better deal for the money since an extra 4/8/16/32GB card would be useful later. Instead I picked up a marked up adapter pack locally (SanDisk Mobile Mate Duo; 1 x MicroSD -> USB 1 x MicroSD -> SD Card) for $9.99. What a ripoff. At least I don't have to worry about the gamble of using my old adapter that I believe was malfunctioning. The new card and adapter are working fine so far after a full card format on the computer and installation plus format in the phone.

Priest and Holy Water not needed :D

I decided to experiment with the old card a little, for science, before sending it back so I left it in a cup of water overnight, scuffed the contacts like crazy with a magnet, and then microwaved the card on high for a few minutes. Surprisingly the card was still readable by my PC! After that I drilled a hole through it like advised. I have to be honest it was kind of fun abusing the card and then drilling a hole through it before sending it back. It was for sure non-functional after that. :)
