Help Why do URLs not show as hyperlinks in Emails? [solution for rooters, workaround for others]

Lord Vader

Android Enthusiast
Ever since getting my EVO LTE, most of my Emails (Hotmail, Comcast, and Gmail) that contain hyperlinks do not show these links as clickable. In other words, they come across as unclickable, plain text.

Now, before someone says I don't have my Email accounts set up for HTML capabilities, I do, indeed, have it set up that way. For one thing, SOME of my Emails do have clickable links. It appears that the auto-Email post notifications generated from forums, this one included, are all plain text, which means I cannot click on the link to be taken to the thread or post.

Again, some of my Emails DO have URLs as fully HTML clickable. I cannot for the life of me figure out why most do not.

I'm looking at the HTC Mail client on my 3vo and LTEvo, exact same message.

On the 3vo (running an earlier GB) the link in the mail is showing up - on the LTEvo, it's not.

And I have the Apple fix suppressed as well as possible.

This is another Apple-driven, court-ordered fix to your HTC phone.

Workaround (yeah, it's sucky, but it works) -

Install ChooseBrowser.

Select link in mail.

Choose to Share the selected text, via ChooseBrowser, you may have to tap "See all..." to get to it - choose your browser.

Thanks Apple.

I just edited in a workaround in my post while you posting, please check it, and meanwhile, I'll look further under the hood and see if this is fixable.

OBTW

K-9 Mail, free in the Play Store, does NOT have this problem.

I haven't used K-9 in two years, so I'm having to re-learn the setups myself....

You could.... petition the USPTO to invalidate Apple's patent on clickable interfaces :)

I kid, I kid :)

The real kidders are the dogs in Congress who let the dot-com patent changes happen.

Everything we're up against is prior art and violated nicely by Microsoft, but Apple won't take them on.

Anyway - K-9 for now, I guess.

Rooters can fix this, provided you have busybox with sed.

adb into /system, then

Code:
su
cd /system
cp -p build.prop build.prop.orig
`which sed` -i 's/ro.da1.enable=true/ro.da1.enable=false\nro.da1.method=false/g' /system/build.prop
(copy/paste those lines into your adb shell window, the back tics make a difference)

Be sure the /system is mounted r/w, reboot to see effect, remove build.prop.orig or store away for future reference - and always make a nandroid backup before doing stuff like this first, I can't be held accountable if you don't. ;)

Removes the App Association setting altogether.

I detest K-9 Mail, having attempted to use it several times in the past. Its confusing, complex system of folders, classes, etc. caused me to literally utter profanities at my EVO OG. I found it to be one of the most confusing, complicated Email apps ever created, and I'm not exactly an idiot when it comes to technology. If I ruled the world, I'd have its creators executed just to placate my ire.

I posted this before, but it got moved or deleted for some reason. In the first week I had the ELTEVO, I was actually getting full links in emails. Starting about 2 weeks ago, I noticed that the links in emails were no longer links, they were simply text (no underline, blue, hyperlinks, etc.). I know there was the whole Apple patent thing that related to this, but I never received an OTA update (that I was aware of) that would have changed this.

I work with a commercial real estate firm and was happy/delighted to be able to link from emails during that 1st week with the LTEVO (since I thought this ability might have been omitted from the patent thing). I get about 30 - 50 emails per day from other agents with links to property fact sheets and flyers. Now I cannot link to these and it's very frustrating and disappointing. I now have to wait until I'm in front of a computer to review these fact sheets (unless I want to try to copy the hyperlink and paste into browser while out and about or on the road...no thanks).

What's the deal. Anyone else notice this?? I NEED this ability on my ELTEVO...always had it on the OG EVO and miss it dearly!! Help!!

I've merged your post here, it's all the same subject.

I remember seeing your post, it didn't get deleted, it must've gotten moved - I wanted to merge all of this with your original one, I couldn't find it either.

Regardless of why it worked before, you're rooted now, and this is easily fixable.

Thanks Apple.

I've never really cared for Apple before, but I REALLY dislike them for taking away basic functionality like this. What's next? We won't be allowed virtual keyboards, or screens on our phones? Maybe they think they invented charging ports??? Bah :argh:

Hi all

Quick question. When someone sends me a link to youtube through text or email, I used to get an option to open the link with the browser or the app. I don't see the option for that anymore, nor have I been prompted to choose. I would like to be able to open these links through the youtube app and not the browser.

How can I do that?

Thanks

If you used to be able to do that, it's likely you set the action as default. If you go to menu>settings>applications and find the browser that opens the video, tap on that, scroll to the bottom of the page and clear defaults. This should bring back your choices. If you always wish to have the choice, then don't check the box that says default.

I never had the option on this phone. But I had it on my original Evo, and my Evo 3 I will try ur suggestion though, thanks.

See the link in Rxpert's post - you can not get the option back by clearing defaults.

You can only get it by clearing out the settings under the hood courtesy of the Apple dictate as backed by the court. You must be rooted to make the change back to normal.

Wow, I had been kind of ignoring Apple's shenannigans, blissfully insulated from their effects by still having my OG Evo... but now that their effects have hit home... Damn them. I used to be okay with Apple's presence in the market, thinking that despite their tendency to influence the market to create more simplistic devices than I would like, they were good in general for personal technology.

But no more. These predatory acts are inexcusable. Damn them to hell.
