What's a worthy replacement?

I got a 3 sim to test the signal where it matters to me. I got payg to test but I will not stay payg. As soon as a handset I want is available, I will be going straight back on contract as I cannot afford to buy one.

That's why I haven't gone to giff gaff

Strangely that is why I went with GG.
I could well end up back on an O2 contract when the good shi... er ... tech hits the street.
GG is on the O2 network so I already know how good the signal is around here... and I know it sounds funny but I actually get 1 bar more in the house now than with the O2 sim.
Also PAYG

Sorry, when I mean pay, I mean my income. I went from self employed, paid weekly to permanent.paid monthly. I had 1 week pay to last me a month and a lot of bills got.messed up

Surely if you explain what happened then they should give you some leeway

If you time it right giffgaff could be an option in the future. They offer payback for signing recruits and posting in the community. I went with an 18 month contract last time, 6 months on giffgaff and I've raised more than enough payback for my new S3 :D

I dont think there is any human element. Its just a score. Besides will be waiting for quidco offers so will be doing the whole thing online.

Erm... I dont think Id manage that.

Maybe not now su but next phone time if you don't go for a 24 month contract. A bit of work leaving sims in local shops/hairdressers etc and you'd soon make it back.

I had a brief play in a phone shop this morning. It was noticeably more fluid than the One X in the next display.

None of the benchmarks I've seen include the xperia s. I saw one with the one XL which is also Qualcomm s4 and that had s better overall score than the gs3....

How did you think it felt and looked? I know a lot of people are being negative about the plasticky finish.

Well I received my Galaxy SIII on the 30th and I'm very pleased with it.

I was worried that I would find it too big, being used to the Desire, and having quite small hands, but it feels great in the hand (omg I can feel the double entendres coming on again...). As to the 'plasticy feel' I think it feels nice and quite classy in fact.

I've sadly sold on my Desire to a friend. It's nice that I'll still be able to visit it when I want, and keep in touch, and my friend is well pleased with what I still feel is an awesome device.

In reply to the title of this thread, I would definitely recommend the SIII as a worthy replacement for the Desire. It's fast and expandable with no storage headaches, it's got that all-so-essential removable battery, and the developer base is already hitting the floor running.

Over on XDA there is a guide to rooting it using a utility called Odin, Chainfire has ported Clockworkmod recovery, and there is already a custom rom available. :)

I'm going to wait a while before rooting it, maybe making sure I can return to stock unrooted in case the phone needs replacing under warranty, but I am nevertheless excited about my new phone, and hope that it will serve me as well as did my Desire.

Thank you all for the help you have given freely during my time here. It will be interesting to see where all the Desire's children grow up and move to. A number have already flown the coop and moved to the One X, and now the SIII is out, there is a real candidate for a replacement. I was really considering the Ascend D Quad XL but Huwawei are just taking too long to release it, especially since they demoed the phone months ago, and so now I have made my choice. I may possibly feel a pang of doubt when the Ascend comes out, but I have my new Samsung as consolation. So no regrets here.

Thank you.

Dave

Dave has given a much better answer than I could, but as far as you can judge the feel of a phone wrapped in cable ties and anti-theft tags it felt fine. Looks seem very clean and simple. The white seemed nice. The only blue I found was held down by a metal frame so I couldn't get a good look at the back. I think it might take a little longer for me to be sure of that one.

I might slightly prefer the finish of the One X, but I don't have any problems with the SGS3 in that respect.

Although I haven't seen the back of the pebble blue model in the flesh either, I now think it might not be as nice as the white. To me, the back of the white model reminds me of - I was trying to think what it reminds me of, in order to describe it - it reminds me of enamel, not the 'cheap glossy plastic' that was described everywhere upon its unveiling.

It turns out to be the Samsung Galaxy S3 for me. The Ascend D Quad XL never shows, and I was able to get a lot of money for my Desire in the reclamation process.
Right now the S3 is the best phone out there for me, in relation to my needs.

See you over there

HTC are in the process of doing what i said they would do, they will be releasing a new rom in the next 2 weeks. The devs over at xda have baked the beta ruu into a rom, this new rom finally uses the ICS kernel instead of the current gingerbread one.
Benchmarks are on par with the SGS3 with the added advantage of improved battery life & something that the SGS3 can't compete with, the low power 5th core on the HOX.
Should be pretty interesting to get new benchmarks to compare when the RUU for the HOX is finally released, may be worth waiting a little while longer if you haven't already chosen yet.

Actually you're wrong. It does compete. Sgs3 battery life is amazing.

SGS3 has lots of other power saving technology built in that HTC has not.

Also with a custom kernel, we have hotplug which dynamically switches cores on or off. I actually think the HTC struggles to compete on any level when it comes to power saving.

Once Samsung. Fix the cell standby issue (which even with, battery life thrashes desire with dGB) there's not even going to be a comparrison.

If you Google sgs3 one x battery life, people who owned both have stated that the sgs3 wins

It's hard to quantify right now but I'm getting at least an hour more screen on with at least 20% more left than dgb

after seeing it in the flesh and SU's comments I'm all but sold on the SGS3. One question is the screen - every ones says this screen is inferior to the One X. I couldn't tell, but I do read alot of books, would this be worse on the S3? Would I even notice?

I have read that too. To be honest, I have been looking at the screen intensely and it really is truly beautiful. The 720p is crystal clear. Watching videos is an immense experience. It completely blows anything Ive ever seen out of the water (ive never looked at the One X screen).
