How To: ICS Stock Upgrade Without OTA or Root

Jesus thats alot of steps..... ill just wait
It just looks like a lot of work. He's included a lot of steps to ensure every stays on the correct path and does things in the correct order. It really is pretty simple once you have the drivers installed and as long as you ignore anything that you may have read that you need to perform "13) Open the .bat file in Matt's Utility folder" using Administrator rights.

Once I got those two things straightened out, it took about 35 or 40 minutes for the entire process .... and most of that time was waiting for data to be written to the phone or for the update flash process to do all it's housekeeping.

Been on it for a little over 12 hours now and it's looking pretty good. Way different, but good. And, there's still plenty of stuff to freeze if you are of a mind to do so. :)

Hello, I have a small issue that maybe someone can assist with. Having used this method to upgrade to ICS and to root the phone right afterward, how would I go about unrooting the phone but keeping ICS?

It probably should be mentioned that you REALLY want to make sure you have lots of battery when you're doing this. More detail is below, but sufficient to say that bad things can happen if you try to do this when the battery is low. Making sure you're battery is well charged is an easy way to prevent those problems.

Detailed description here
If the battery is below 20% you will not be able to us AP Fastboot to flash things onto your phone. If it drops below 20% while you're running the utility the phone it's quite possible to corrupt the software on the phone, preventing it from booting into anything be Fastboot. The phone doesn't charge in Fastboot, so you're battery is stuck too low to flash anything that would fix the problem.
If this happens first try this here
If that isn't working, try this. As mentioned there, if the battery dies completely while doing that you are totally SOL, so I'd suggest doing it as soon as possible once you realize that you can't charge the phone the other way.

And again, this is EASILY solved by simply making sure you're phone is well charged before you try using Matt's utility.

So this is the same as the OTA update that we will be receiving soon and will not void the warranty of the phone? Will it also get standard updates?

make sure you right click it and run as administrator. If it does not run your download may be corrupted. make sure you disable all anti virus and firewall software. download it again. extract it again and repeat.

It appears that my computer is seeing this file as a cmd instead of bat. I don't know how to change this.

Do you mean that it's opening in a command window (a DOS clone command line editor)? That's what it's supposed to do.

I could have misinterpreted what you said...

When I right click on the .bat file on my desktop it gives me no option to run as administrator, just "read" along with the other normal commands like cut, copy, etc.

When I right click and select properties, it shows that it is a cmd file instead of a windows batch file and won't run as an executable file. I'm thinking I need to change the program that opens the file by default, but when I go into control panel to do this, it has no option to change it to a windows batch file.

try opening the Command Prompt, navigating to the folder and running the file. You can make this easier by moving it to the root of the C: drive (that is in the C: drive but not in another folder), to a folder named 1.7 (you can use any other hard drive instead of C)

Then in the CMD prompt enter:
cd c:\1.7
DroidRAZRUtility.bat

(Moving the folder also gets around another bug with the file. The script does a poor job parsing file paths, so the easy location avoids that bug)

That worked!! Thank you very much for your assistance!

I also did this and ics works great, but I did make some mistakes, though nothing real big. Couple of suggestions: make sure the zip update is in the correct drive. When I plug my phone into my computer 2 drives appear. You want to use the drive that has the least amount of folders. When in doubt just put it in both. In my case it was in the wrong drive at first, but I could still reboot from recovery and try again.

Make sure you install the drivers before starting; saves some time. I wiped data and cache and my phone is working flawlessly.

All in all it wasn't too bad and im a rookie fore sure.

I loaded an early release of GB onto my Droid Pro but it required loading ClockworkMod, which forever made my phone boot into recovery mode after being charged. I'm a little reluctant to load this version of ICS to my Droid Razr Maxx. However, it looks like this process doesn't require loading a new ROM manager....??? Is that true? If so, if I don't get ICS tomorrow AM, I'm biting the bullet and giving this method a go.

It does not.

Followed all the steps...never been rooted, stock maxx.

I get to the recovery steps with the Droid laying on his side. I then volume button down to select the zip file. It tries to load but gets to only first step and says "Unable to verify whole signature file."

Right above that error, it says "unable to access e:\cache\caller." Yes, e is my external card.

I've run ICS 1.7 three times (first time didn't work, next two times did). I've cleared the cache then even did a factory reset. Now running stock GB in order to post this.

Just cannot move forward! Sux!

Any help greatly appreciated.

I, too, got tired of waiting and after a few silly mistakes on my part, I was able to get ICS loaded on my Maxx and all I can say is WOW!! I was sent a Maxx last week as a replacement to my Galaxy Nexus that could only connect to 4G if I was in a Verizon store (for the most part) and I like ICS on the Maxx better than I did on the Gnex. Battery life has been incredible and I can actually use the 4G in my area now and haven't had to keep my Maxx on CDMA only like I did on the Nexus to be able to use it as a phone.

This is a great update and I really appreciate the Utility and all the work that I'm sure was involved in making it as well as the assistance I received yesterday getting the utility up and running on my PC.
