Hello, Aside from a faster processer and a larger /amoled screen , what is the difference between this and the Hero?
I have a bad feeling about this.
couple years ago, Sprint announced the Instinct, with an iphone killer ad of $100milion. they even hired a design consultant firm for the phone. that was a big loss investment. Second after Nextel buyout.
then last year, they announced the Pre. Dan Hesse learned the lesson and did not expect the Pre as iphone killer. today, Palm is dying slowly.
Now, the Supersonic with Wimax 4G. Google back is helpful but Wimax seems to lose the battle against LTE. buying a Wimax device that is not compatible with the rest of the world (LTE) is not a good start.
Are you actually with FOX News? With your knowledge and your screen name, I assume you are. If so, I would really like to get the facts straight.
Right now, Sprint has the ONLY 4G network here in the US. For the most part, LTE doesn't even exist here (yet), so you can't compare the two. It's true that Verizon is testing LTE, but they haven't even started to deploy it yet. Sprint has been working on WiMAX for about 5 years now and they started deploying it in 2008. The HTC Supersonic will be the first WiMAX enabled phone for Sprint, but they're promising more 4G phones before the end of the year. Just recently, Verizon announced that they would have their first LTE 4G phone by the middle of next summer. By that time, the next generation Supersonic phone should be available and there should be many more 4G phones by then, running on the WiMAX network.
Nobody knows for sure how the WiMAX/LTE will end up, but I think Sprint has a pretty big heard start that may in the end prove difficult for Verizon to overcome.
You mentioned that the Samsung Instinct and the Palm Pre haven't done that well, but you didn't mention the HTC Hero, which runs on Android. The other two do not. I wouldn't say the Hero has been a huge success, but nonetheless, it has been successful and it has received a lot of accolades. Anyway, it would be more fair to compare the Supersonic to the Hero.

A lot of people like their Heroes, but some of us that have one, would like it to be more powerful and I would find browsing the Internet a much more comfortable experience with a larger screen.
When the Supersonic is released, it will be the most powerful Android phone available today. Forget about all the iPhone killer stuff. I hate that term, because it's over used and blown out of proportion by the media. That being said, even the next generation iPhone won't have 4G capability. Not unless they move over to Sprint. You might have a bad feeling about it foxnews, but I feel just the opposite. I feel that the Supersonic is going to be a huge success, especially after their 4G network gets built out more. By the middle of next summer when Verizon comes out with their 4G phone, WiMAX should be available in most major cities. LTE will just be getting started.
I agree with those that say Sprint had some problems in the past and they lost customers to Verizon, but they have a good reliable network, their customer service is really good now, their prices are a lot better than Verizon's and they have the only 4G network. The way I see it, Sprint is going to be getting a lot of their customers back.
You can't compare an Instinct to the Supersonic. I think the Pre was doomed from the beginning with it's hardware design (which you can't blame Sprint) but it was poorly marketed. My biggest gripe is with Sprint's marketing strategy so there I may agree with you. I'm sure they'll address that.I have a bad feeling about this.

Very well said! But I have a quick question....are the specs you posted, including the 720p recording confirmed? I know that so far it's said that the HTC Incredible will not have 720p (although a software upgrade might change this). Since both phones MAY be coming out in a similar time frame I found this a bit curious. Thanks, as always, for the thoughtful post. I'm sure I'm on the fence at least until after CTIA. I am now VERY curious about the SS!

Android is the fastest growing smartphone platform. LTE isn't even being deployed yet. WiMAX is getting a huge jump especially if Sprint can advertise it effectively during their window of opportunity. By the time LTE comes out WiMAX will already have a strong network. As a fallback plan WiMAX can also be converted to LTE and I'm sure they could figure out a way to run both signals to ease the transition from WiMAX to LTE devices. WiMAX won't die with Google, Comcast, Intel, Brighthouse, and Time Warner investing into the technology. You can't tell me all those companies took the wrong turn.
Another "advantage" of LTE has been stated that it will be faster than WiMAX. Well that may be true once they roll it out, but WiMAX eventually will be upgraded from IEEE 802.16e WiMAX Release 1 to IEEE 802.16m WiMAX Release 2. With the proposed 802.16m evolution, up to 1 Gbit/s fixed speeds and 100 Mbit/s mobile speeds will be attainable. WiMAX 2 is expected to debut in 2011, the same year LTE will be starting to be deployed.
hmm well it's HTC, they are good about LED notification and proximity sensors are common now too so it could be those two things, even a brightness sensor for automated lighting, but who knows i realllly hope it does have a front facing camera
anyone have a best guess on how much the supersonic will be without a contract? selling my hero for $275 tomorrow wondering how much im gonna have to put towards it
It does have both of those sensors in it, at least according to what I saw, of course that also said it had front facing soooo...hmm well it's HTC, they are good about LED notification and proximity sensors are common now too so it could be those two things, even a brightness sensor for automated lighting, but who knows i realllly hope it does have a front facing camera
Yeah I don't really see where it is either. It's listed in the spec sheet I saw which was dated around MWC, I wonder if it ended up getting nixed or just isn't in the test units or something.I think I'm going to have to agree with you on this one, Covert. That really doesn't look like a camera to me either, but a light sensor wouldn't be out of the question.
I just saw this article published at Brighthand.com today:
Several High-End Smartphones Expected to Debut at CTIA
PUBLISHED: 3/21/2010
One of the most important phone-related tradeshows of the year is going to be held this week in Las Vegas. This spring's CTIA should see the debut of a number of new cutting-edge smartphones.
The models that have drawn the most pre-show attention have all been created by HTC, so this company has the potential to dominate this tradeshow.
HTC Supersonic
An unconfirmed report says that Sprint is going to take the wraps off the HTC Supersonic at CTIA. If true, it means that this carrier is going to announce its first smartphone with WiMAX service much earlier than had been expected.
Leaked reports show that this smartphone would be impressive even without this 4G service, as it will have 4.3-inch touchscreen and a slim tablet shape. It will supposedly run the consumer-friendly Android OS 2.1 on a high-end 1 GHz processor, and include the HTC Sense user interface which extends Google's standard one.
The Supersonic will reportedly be on store shelves a week or so after CTIA comes to an end.
Also mentioned in this article were the HDC HD2 and the HTC Incredible.
I just wondered into the Incredible forum which I do from time-to-time and they were discussing the 2010 CTIA Tech Awards Finalists. I went to the CTIA site and checked it out and indeed, they are announcing the finalist on March 24th at 2:00 p.m. I don't know what time Dan Hesse's keynote is, but I'm hoping it will be over before they announce this award. Of course folks in the Incredible forum are hoping their phone gets the award, but from everything I see when I compare the two, I think they're going to be a disappointed bunch over there.
i thought it did a while back? hmmmm hope soo and it is already in sprints system as well as a warehouse verification now too

I hope you will be right but here is my take. being the first with 4G does not mean a win. Remember that sprint was the first with 3G. Their 3G was fastest back then. Verizon 3G was behind and ATT was even worse. now looking at ATT, their 3G usage is going off the roof with iphone usage while sprint 3G network is not even fully used.
it is the mass scale of market that dictates the advantage. ATT and Verizon has much deeper pocket and negotiation power than sprint. ATT and Verizon together with LTE, along with the world, will create a mass market scale.
if you're a phone manufacturer, would you sign a contact with ATT/Verizon and sell your phone for $99 on their network to ATT's 70 million customers and Verizon's 85 million customers? or sign a contact with sprint and sell your phone for $199 to only 55million customers?
then if mon and dad are on Verizon/ATT, most likely sons and sisters will also be on the same network. again it is a mass market scale that dictates the advantage.
gadget lovers, like us who love powerful phones with greatest technologies, are the minority and does not create mass market scale. look at iphone, its hardware is inferior compared to supersonic, but it's mass market share wil overrun supersonic many times over.
Do you think the Supersonic will have a Wimax / LTE dual chipset in it? Seems like it would be a smart call but it would become a cost issue as well im sure.
I also hope it is out a week after the keynote, but it still hasn't passed the FCC.![]()
There are some experts around that seem to put a lot of faith in things like this and and they profess to know what they're talking about (I don't mean you KRD), but I have faith that the Supersonic will be here soon and that all our dreams will come true.
