Note 10.1 hands on

I've had the chance to play around with the Note 10.1, that's the tablet with the S Pen. The reason they've delayed the release is that they've changed it dramatically since the preview at the MWC. It now has a 1.4GHz quadcore processor (I think it's the Exynos on the SIII), a 5 MP camera (instead of the 3.15) and the back got a hyperglazed finish just as the SIII. I've had the pebble blue one and I'm not sure if there is a marble white one.

The S Pen is much bigger than the Note 5.3 (looks EXACTLY the same), but smaller than the model shown at the MWC and it now fits inside a vertical hole in the lower left side. An amazing software feature is the Photoshop Touch app which is brilliant (as you may see in my video).

Here are my videos:

It's an astonishing device, clearly stepping way higher in the high end line and it works like a charm. If you have questions feel free to ask, but unfortunately I no longer have it to do extra demos.

I was thinking of getting a Lenovo ThinkPad tablet when the new version comes out, but now it seems Lenovo will not be releasing a TPT 2 ( at least an Android version ), I'm looking for something else to get. Since a decent pen is a *must* for me that leaves the Note 10.1.

There are several things that I am particularly interested in -- First do you know what quarter they plan to release it in? General price range? I noticed ( or actually failed to notice ) the lack of a microUSB/miniUSB/USB port. Did I just miss it?

Also what note taking apps does it come with. Any special note taking apps that will be available (in the app store ) to use with it?

The release date is soon. I don't know for sure, but since it's got to me (and I'm no important guy) it can't be far.
About the USB, I also hate this, but all Samsung tablets come woth just the proprietary port for dock, charging and other accessories. Another downside to this is that they all refuse to charge from the USB of a computer, only the wall socket will work.
It comes with S Note and S Memo, two apps specifically designed for the SPen. They come woth handwriting recognition and it even has an equation mode where you can write mathematical formulae, and of course a drawing mode with multiple pens, sizes and colors.

That's the most disappointing thing I've ever seen. No USB connection? I was ready to start throwing money at this thing until I read this. Having a USB connection for charging & easy file movement is a MUST. I don't trust hardware with proprietary connections (ie. apple products) and can no longer get excited for this product. Color me sad.

Any other suggestions on a 10inch tablet? I really liked the idea of the stylus, but only recently said "hey, I want that".

Thanks for your insight.

I've look at other Samsung tablets and they generally have some sort of proprietary dock to USB connector available for a few bucks. Probably can't use to charge though.

Does the Tablet include the calling & text messaging features that it's smaller counterpart enjoyed?

Also, both those videos are private now?

Don't get your shorts too bunched up . . . if it is like other Galaxy Tab products, there'll be an optional accessory USB adapter that plugs into the proprietary port and gives you USB access. Not the most desirable way I agree, but at least it is a way to get USB access. If the product proves to be a superior tablet in other ways (such as having the S-Pen) then I can live with the USB adapter.

Yes. From what I understand there is 16/32/64gb..I want a 64gb since I'm a download addict.. I'm sure it will cost a lot though. Hopefully it will come with jelly bean!

I have had mine since Monday. I like it so much I am selling my Thinkpad Tablet and Samsung S7. Enough said. I ordered every conceivable adapter and accessory on Amazon and they all work perfectly. USB and SD card readers, USB cables( you can only charge with the power plug that comes with the tablet). It is much thinner than the Thinkpad and very fast. The SPen software is awesome. It will work with Quill, Lecture Notes, Write, EZPDF, Writepad Stylus and any other inking apps in the Play Store, but I erased them all because the SPen suite does so much more and is very high quality software. The stylus is very tiny, and but the good news is that you can use most Wacom styli as well. I tested with my S7S and it worked perfectly. There are certainly some minor issues like less battery life, will only accept up to a 32GB microSD card. They might fix this I would the US versions. Screen is nice, but not as bright as the ASUS tablets, still better than the Thinkpad. I purchased a Motorola bluetooth keyboard with a trackpad which gives me a laptop experience. Samsung includes Polaris Office which handles all of the Microsoft doc editing and annotating you want. The multi screen feature is awesome. I can do Web research and take notes on the same screen or even watch a lecture and take notes. Slow to charge like the Thinkpad but the desktop chargers are only $34 from Samsung and will speed that up. The fast processor and 2GB of RAM have handled everything I have thrown at it. If this had a 1920x1200 display it would put a huge dent in Apples iPad sales.
I will post some more detailed observations as I go, but will leave you all with this. I have been involved with tech for over 25 yrs and this tablet has me more excited than any other gadget I have owned in the last 10 yrs. It meets all of my needs and can replace about 95% of what I was doing with my laptop. I wish mine had more storage(the US version should) and a higher resolution, but in its current state it still a must have for college students or business people that like to be mobile.
