Petition For Memory Cards on Future Nexus Devices

zachavm

Android Enthusiast
As the title says, I've started a petition to Google to include memory card slots on future nexus devices and to encourage other manufactures to do the same. Please check it out and sign the petition.

Also, if a wise and powerful mod saw fit, I think this could be worth a sticky.

note: if you don't agree or simply don't see a need for memory cards then just don't sign. Please don't post negative comments in this thread.

I'm honestly fine with no sd card, what bugged me was the fact that the Nexus 7 only maxes out at 16gb. Hell the Galaxy Nexus has 32gb.

I hate switching devices and having to go and try to upload all my crud i have on my phone to my computer or online. I stored my 32g sd while I was switched to a gnex and when I went to a razr, i couldn't find the sd card. If i can just have my sd card on any device im currently using i wouldn't have to worry about it

Signed. Someone tell Google that their cloud services are nice and all, but US carriers ARE CHARGING FOR DATA! Why would I want to give Verizon an extra $30 a month when I can just buy a 64gb card? 64GB! Google, why do you think the Galaxy S3 is the most ordered device in history? Because Samsung is giving people what they want: sd storage and removable batteries. At a time when everyone else is going in the opposite direction. $ talks and bs walks.

I'll admit I bought the Galaxy Nexus when the price dropped, but that was more because I couldn't justify the additional cost to hit the S3 that I really wanted. Also, JB was too awesome to pass up.

I LOVE the nexus device concept, but I just HATE that they are using it to drive their philosophies instead of giving the consumer what they want. I miss hardware buttons and the lack SD card slot is just inexcusable.

Well, that's sort of the entire point of the Nexus. Its meant to be a phone that Google thinks Android devices as a whole should aim for. And Google aims to go SD card-less. They aren't going to design a phone for a design philosophy they DON'T agree with.

To be honest, I haven't really felt cramped by 32 GB. Now the 16 GB on the GSM Nexus might be iffy, but 32 GB for me, has been plenty. Even if I didn't use Google Play almost religiously, I managed to survive with a 16 GB microSD on my old phone for 2 years. Then again, I don't really use my phone for movies and tv shows unless its off Netflix or my file server.

And while, I can see your point with the SD card, I honestly say screw hardware buttons (well, except for the power button and volume keys obviously). There was literally no functionality lost from what I've seen. If anything, you gain extra screen real estate for videos and games and such.

No. Just, no.

We don't need SD cards. We need more proper storage, yes, but we don't need a micro-SD slot in every device forever. This is like the 3.5in floppy drive of this generation and devices. It will be phased out and we will all get over it.

I wish I could manage the storage a little better on my GNex, but I have absolutely zero issues with it. My Thunderbolt with a 32gb SD card never managed to get filled up. People manage with iPods that are smaller than this. If you're doing so much with your phone that the amount of storage available to you isn't enough... maybe you need to hold off or use more devices (as they were intended).

I still have a point and shoot, which is superior to every mobile phone I've ever seen take a picture. I take it with me when I know there will be pictures taken. I have a handheld camera that shoots 720 video, but takes meh pictures. Thankfully I can fit both of them in my wife's purse.

No SD slots is fine. I can't wait to get my hands on a Nexus 7! I look forward to steamlining my mobile experience with the Google platform and the latest Android OS on my Nexus devices.

I agree with others who say this is the point of the Nexus design. Personally I love the fact that my phone has sufficient internal space for everything I do rather than a tiny SD card that I am forced to upgrade.

If you want to cast a vote that actually matters, buy a non-Nexus phone with an SD card. Voting with the wallet gets their attention. ;)

No SD card and an actual mass storage mode would be perfect. One thing I don't miss about my nexus was the shitty storage when I connected to PC. 9/10 times it wouldn't even show up

Managing the storage isn't the issue. Now this may apply to a small number of people but i go through phones like i do underwear. Transferring sd cards is simple. Move to a different phone. Switch between a phone with no sd, not so simple. I have to go to my computer to transfer the necessary files. I use my computer once in a blue moon. Its a pain. Now i COULD just forego certain devices, i can even deprive myself of the Nexus or another phone without sd slots but it would be nice to not have to. I thought more people saw removable storage as an advantage. ... ???

Oh! And if your phone gets thrown against a wall by a lady friend for w/e reason, the. Sd card has a decent chance of survival :p

@kool kat2, doesn't cloud storage also remove the need to worry about your storage being thrown against the wall? For whatever reason. ;-)

If a "lady friend" is throwing your phone against the wall, you have bigger problems than the storage situation on your electronic devices.

Hahaha, If you have unlimited data it does. Not the poor sap on 2g caps :(.... Judging from this thread, sd card lovers are now the minority? (yes i gathered that data from all 15 posts XD)

And just to clear things up, the lady friend thing wasn't personal experience, in case you guys were thinking i was a weirdo :D

I'm on my fourth Android device. From OG Droid to Incredible to Thunderbolt to GNexus. I change devices pretty regularly and honestly... I am glad to be done with the swapping of SD cards. On the Incredible it was very easy to pop in and out and on the fly I could switch but having to remove the battery just to access it? WHAT IS THE POINT?! If I did want storage like that, I'd want it accessible, not hidden away so that I was FORCED to power off the device.

Keep stuff backed up. Taking your phone for a swim doesn't keep the SD card magically alive with all of your stuff on it. You have two choices: get a device with SD storage or don't. It's easy. If you'd like to continue to have quality phones with current technology, you might have to adapt to not having an SD slot.

Next people will be talking about what a pain removable batteries are. I mean, you have to actually turn the phone off! Much better to spend a day and a half waiting for your 32gb of data to stream back to your phone from the cloud. And the cloud will only cost you $X dollars a month. Who wouldn't want that?

The reason for no memory cards is that there's no point having removable storage today, because the only reason it's removable is to swap data between devices. If those devices are connected to the cloud and do that over the Internet, what's the point? Of course, plenty of devices aren't, which is where the key problem arises - cameras being a key example.

Privacy concerns are futile, considering you're already connected to the Internet. You're already a system on the Internet, in the same way that a cloud server is a system on the Internet. Both just as secure, unless you have the irrational paranoia that perhaps Google wants to look through all your porn and show it to your grandma.

Besides, internal storage will likely not be going anywhere soon. Cloud services at the moment are mostly for syncing, not for general access (though Google's clearly pushing that, too).

I think thats the point. It sucks to choose between features. Wishful thinking ,i know but it would be nice not to have to choose. Kind of like arguing about batteries. Why do you need a removable battery? We have power packs. (Ok i do like me my power pack lol)

Edit : oh and the RAZR's sd slot is not hidden so you have to turn the phone off.

The whole thing is there is no point NOT to have one. They are cheap and take up almost no space. All of those arguing against them, having it doesn't hurt you one single iota. Not having them significantly hurts those who do want one.

Methinks that google is trying to move away from FAT32 as well which is inevitable with SD cards. While its universal, its incredibly archaic.

I'm very happy I no longer have to worry about getting an SD card, researching which is the fastest, tracking down cards on Newegg like a predator! I have better things to do with my life. Google has it's reasons and I'm willing to adapt.

...says a thread full of people who aren't stuck with 16gb international phones. :p

I would love an SD slot simply for music, but on the whole it has a whole list of things aside from storage (lack of physical media buttons, terrible battery life, physical size, etc) that a dedicated media device will kill it on. I'm still using my Cowon S9 because there's no way my GNex can compete with it.

Not having a SD card is down right STUPID.

AT first I didn't give a shit about the memory card.

A couple days ago my phone bricked itself doing nothing (seems to be a common issue - the warranty guy didn't even ask me ONE question and sent the new phone instantly).

I had to start from SCRATCH because my phone would not turn on. The SD card is internal and now I lost everything.

Was an IDIOT idea. Put in SD cards you lazy fools!
