Polycarbonate is a thermoplastic polymer.

Yes, the central root material may be "plastic", but thermoplastic polymer (polycarbonate) is processed and formed completely differently using high heat and is a completely different material when it comes to strength, durability and isolation.

For this same reason this material is used for cars, jets and homes all over the world, not just on samsung phones. lol.

Same could be said for metal vs forged metal... yes, they are both METAL, but forged metal costs 10x's more and is 10x's stronger.

I guess its all subjective but I dont get the whole "cheap materials" argument against samsung. YES, apple uses the most expensive choice in using glass both front and back, but could you imagine how heavy the S3 would be with glass on both sides? And oh btw, people who rave the HTC One X is "higher quality materials"... sorry to bust your balls, but its "plastic" also. lmao

And none of that means that it is not plastic.

Plastic can stop a bullet, but that doesn't make it "not plastic".

Is the SIII hard to get?
They're everywhere here. You're hard pressed to find a phone shop that doesn't have them.
It's common to have 30 or 30 mobile phone shops together and they all have the S3 in little piles.

very hard to get them in the US.only select T mobile stores where getting them in.now they are getting shipments of 3-6 but they are gone in a hour because there are so many people trying to get them.and every other carrier here in the US does not carry them in stores yet.but i think sprint was supposed to get there phones in store yesterday.

Did I say its NOT PLASTIC. You seem hell-bent on proving that the battery cover is plastic. No *#$%... YES ITS PLASTIC. I was just sharing how polycarbonate compares to your standard plastic. Thats why it has a unique name, because its not your standard "PLASTIC".

What! I thought it was polycarbonate and bullet proof. I was going to glue several battery covers on my vest when I deploy again. Guess ill just have to use iphone glass plates insted.

BMW's are made out of tin and plastic. They must be pos cars.

Why are diamonds expensive, since they are just lumps of coal?

Why is polycarbonate not called plastic and why is it more expensive with different properties?

Why not call titanium, metal? Or glass, sand? Or concrete, rock? Or asphalt, oil? Or oil, organic decomposition?

Plastic bounces, while Glass shatters. I'd rather have a plastic phone than a glass one...

Why is polycarbonate not called plastic
It IS called plastic.

nseriessaga, this is why I seem "hell-bent on proving that the battery cover is plastic". Because some people refuse to believe that it IS plastic. I'd be just as hell-bent on proving that the moon landings WERE REAL!

A diamond IS coal. Why call it a diamond then? Polycarbonate, or lexan, has properties that plastic does not. You can call it plastic, but you would not be correct.
Might as call a BMW M3 an AMC Pacer or Ford Pinto. They all have a steering wheel and 4 tires.

Actually, diamond is not coal. Diamond is carbon. Coal is also carbon. But coal is not diamond and diamond is not coal because of their different compositions.

Likewise, polycarbonate is plastic and vinyl is plastic. But polycarbonate is not vinyl and vinyl is not polycarbonate because they have different compositions.

Also, a BMW M3 (BTW, the BMW in my avatar is for my motorcycle, not car), AMC Pacer, and Ford Pinto are all cars. But they are not the same cars because of their different compositions.

The only difference between coal and a diamond is the tetrahedral arrangement of carbon atoms. Same composition. But I digress.

Point here is plastic is a cheap, brittle and easily scratched substance. Polycarbonate is none of these and oh yeah, different composition and chemical structure to plastic. All those dvd's and cd's you have owned over the years, did you think those were plastic?

Again, you can call it plastic, but you would be wrong. If polycarbonate were plastic, it would be called 'plastic'.

Polycarbonate is a plastic!

Common plastics and uses

Due to their relatively low cost, ease of manufacture, versatility, and imperviousness to water, plastics are used in an enormous and expanding range of products, from paper clips to spaceships. They have already displaced many traditional materials, such as wood, stone, horn and bone, leather, paper, metal, glass, and ceramic, in most of their former uses.

I'm truly incredulous.

You can't walk through a shopping mall here without tripping up on the things.
Shops have piles in the window and they're selling like hot cakes.
There are commonly rows of phone shops in most street and you can guarantee a few even in the smallest villages.
They all have them.

I would have thought the US was a massive market and Samsung would have shoved the newest products there rather than here.

Cost here -Rp6,900,000 or about US$ 738.

How does that compare?

PS - That's serious money out here.

It's a very good plastic.
Imagine the problems if the case was metal.
External antennas for everything. Young wippersnappers won't remember those days.

the cost here is

$630 for the 16gb and $679 for the 32 gb version.

Just checking back in here.. hahaha just realizing how ridiculous and funny this thread has gotten with the great debate of - polycarbonate aka plastic aka oil (yes, if we wanna really break it down to it's true roots, it's OIL.. LOL). But the Samsung battery covers are a tad more plasticky than it is oily I'll give u that :)

It appears that this discussion has run it's course as it's more about the difference of what plastic is used to other completely off-topic discussions. I'm closing this thread to prevent further discussion.

If you have any concerns about my closing this thread, please feel free to PM me about it and I'll be happy to discuss it with you. Thanks!
