Help 4G widget - turn off?

Just curious, what is the point of getting a 4G phone and then turning it off? If you have to manage that yourself when you are not in a 4G coverage area, that is kind of a deal breaker for me. The phone should be able to manage that by it's self. I don't have to turn my 3G off and I am not always in 3G coverage.
I don't know if it works on ICS, but I use a program on my Rezound called '4g Toggle' that takes you to a settings page that let's you choose between LTE/3G or 3G Only.
Apps can't change this setting by themselves so there is no true toggle widget. These apps are more of a shortcut to the settings.

There's another app called Phone Info that does this as well, or you can dial *#*#4636#*#*. They all take you to the test section on the phone. It's mostly for engineers/ tech people. I've had to use it when my Rezound would go into a boot loop because every once in awhile the dropbox where you change from CDMA+LTE (4G) to CDMA auto (3G) would change to WCDMA (GSM) on it's own. Since the phone couldn't find it's carrier it would go into a boot loop.
IIRC they were going to remove the ability to get to this screen with the Rezound's ICS update. Don't know if the Inc4G has this or not.
Phone Info should be the same thing as the 4G Toggle app, or at least take you to the same place (based on his description).
IIRC stands for If I Recal Correctly. Don't feel bad, I had to look it up the first time I was it.
If you don't surf the web much and don't watch video on your phone or web related things, I honestly don't even see the point of getting a 4G phone. Isn't that the purpose of the faster wireless? This is a big part of the reason I have not pulled the trigger on a 4G phone. I use mine normally for calls, texting, looking something up when out and about on the internet and Nav. 3G works great for all that.

There's a difference between 4G on the Inc4G (and GS3) and on previous 4G phones (Rezound, RAZR, etc), and it's the S4 processor. The S4 has LTE on the chip, not as a separate chip. That should dramatically reduce power consumption while on 4G.

wish I could pick up 4g LTE. Trying verizon service for the first time and the map shows me in the middle of LTE, yet I only get 3g. Guess I'll be returning the phone and heading back to ATT.
How much you want for it? PM me... You must of bought it full retail if you can leave and not be on contract with them?

I think he had just switched to VZW. I'm guessing there's a grace period for that?

Just switched to Verizon. Definitely a nice phone but I'm barely hanging on to 3G at my house. The funny thing is Im just west of Boston in a supposedly strong LTE area. I'm pissed as I was really liking this phone.

I don't think Android supports toggling LTE on and off the way you'd toggle something like BT or wifi. You can with HSPA, but not LTE.
You wouldn't think it'd be that difficult though. The previous apps mentioned along with the *#*#4636#*#* take you to a screen that has a drop down box that let's you select form many options, including CDMA+LTE & CDMA auto prl. The dev should be able to code an app that first dials that string, then selects phone, then use an if/then setup for CDMA+LTE or CDMA auto.
Same thing why I don't understand why they can't toggle WiFi like the used to on the OG Inc. Now if you have a WiFi toggle, it just takes you to the Wireless Settings (Airplane mode, WiFi, Bluetooth, Mobile Data, Mobile Hotspot) page. If it worked before, why make it worse?

I know this is a little old, but I didn't want to start a new thread. When I use the LTE OnOff app, I have a bunch of choices for preferred network type. On my Thunderbolt, I switched to CDMA auto (PRL) to switch to 3G. I don't have that option now. My choices are:
CDMA only,
EvDo only,
GSM/WCDMA, CDMA, and EvDo (PRL)
CDMA + LTE/EvDo auto
GSM/WCDMA/LTE auto
CDMA/EvDo/GSM/WCDMA/LTE auto
LTE only
LTE, CDMA
Which of these will keep me on 3G?

I used LTEOnOff to turn off 4G while I was waiting for 4G to be lit up here. Now that 4G is here I want the phone to default to 4G but every reboot sets it to 3G. Is there any way to change that default back? Factory reset didn't do it.

people don't get the phone ONLY for the 4g. in fact i think 4g is not even a top5 priority. it's a hog and i can stream with 3g, so for me 4g isn't even necessary. i used it once when my phone glitched and couldn't 3g. my MAXX priorities are smart phone/apps, battery, stream, maps/gps. 4g is a background icing on the cake.
