Root using rooted dhd abroad - what did i do wrong?

just been to egypt. wanted my phone to be able to recieve calls, and phone friends back home in emergency, altho i realised this would be costly, so as i said, to be used in emergency. i wasnt bothered bout internet at all.

so...... settings, wireless/network, tick in the mobile network 'connected', and in the mobile network options, data roaming and data roaming sound were unticked.

double checked as i sat in doncaster airport that i could call and send/ receive texts.

however, once abroad, i had no signal the whole time. couldnt make a call or receive one. yet my wifes desire had full signal and she was receiving texts. shes using redux and in her settings (slightly different layout), she went settings, wireless/networks, data enabled unchecked and data roaming unchecked. yet she still had a signal whereas i didnt. we're both on giffgaff, so 02 network.

she then came unstuck by ticking them when she wanted to go on facebook for 10 mins and cost us
 
i dont seem to have a basic roaming setting tho. just 'data roaming' and 'data roaming sound'. no 'call roaming' :-/
 
Yep. You're right.

I remember it now.

Under the networks bit , there's something link connect to network automatically ...?

I selected the manual option and then picked a network my SIM allowed.
( This was when I was in Spain on Orange )
 
are you and your wife using the same sim cards from the same carrier?

i would try flip flopping them and see if then you have signal and she does not ;)

yep, i looked at that and wasnt sure whether to select one or not. i spose i maybe should have done then, to see if it gave me a signal :-) was just too scared of hitting something that started using data!!

yes, my wife both using giffgaff sims. she went on facebook for 10 mins and lost her
 
When I went to France with my wife, her Orange branded Galaxy S (she had been with Orange for years) worked no problem but my (rooted) DHD did not (I had only been with Orange for a couple of months)... a couple of months after the holiday, I got a message from Orange telling me that I could use my phone abroad... I think it could be something to do with your network provider... it could be worth speaking to them and asking that they enable the phone (actually enable your contract, not the physical device) for international roaming...
