Root Looking to root my HTC Incredible!

Had my Incredible for a couple of years now and would like to try and root it. I've never rooted a phone before so I have some newbie questions.

1. I'm running Gingerbread 2.3.4, would I have to downgrade or is it possible to root this version?

2. Which guide is the best for someone doing their first root? Aka is the easiest to understand?

3. What are the differences in the ROMs?

4. I have friends who claim that once they jail break their iPhone, that all paid apps become free. Is this also true for Android??

Again, I apologize for the newbie questions and I appreciate any positive help anybody can give me

The only two methods to root are stickied at the top of the forum

The differences between roms is just usually described in the rom thread.

Piracy is discouraged and not discussed on this forum.

Thank you for your reply. Again I apologize for my ignorance and will do some reading on the rooting process and different ROMs, however, I can assure you with my limited knowledge of this area where expertise is very important as to not "brick" your phone, I will have many more questions to follow in this thread. So if anybody else would like to chime in with more information, please do so as I need all I can get! Thanks in advance and I just want to say this forum has helped me learne so much about upcoming phones and will now assist me in learning the rooting process. You all really are the best!! :beer:

It is VERY hard to brick the incredible by just rooting it. And the incredible overall is a very brick resistant phone.

the bottom line is just be cautious what you flash via the bootloader once you have achieved s-off.

flshing roms in recovery is fairly harmless,but flashing a radio,hboot,or any full file that contains one or the other, could brick your phone if the hboot or radio portion became corrupt.

its a good habit to get into to verify the md5 hash of any file that you intend to flash,wether its a rom,mod,or a full RUU.
