Help Some tips for a new Android and S2 user

Newbie
Hi. I'm new to this forum and Android in general. Before this phone, I was using a Nokia N9 and still have a E7.

I want some information and tips from all of you.

1. The phone gets really hot while charging or browsing for some time. Why is it so? Any way to prevent this?
2. In the notification panel drop down, there is way to activate mobile data. I have to go deep into settings to activate it. Any shortcut?
3. Is there any notes application that can read from my external sd card?
4. How can I specify where to store my pics taken through camera? I want to store it on the external memory card again.

Thanks in advance and hope to have a good time in the forum.

This is normal, It seems to vary depending on the individual phone though, some claiming it's physically painful to touch, others saying it gets very warm... It's to do with where the CPU is positioned (in the back)

Yes, if you go to your wall, (i.e. home screen) hold down an empty point on the wall and look through your widgets... You'll find one which has some advanced power saving options on it etc. I think it's called power settings (although my phones cactus atm)it's easy enough to find

3. Is there any notes application that can read from my external sd card?
The standard one is pretty handy, I didn't realise it doesn't read from your sd card?

4. How can I specify where to store my pics taken through camera? I want to store it on the external memory card again.
Can't answer this one but I recommend looking at cameraZOOM, as it allows you to take photos by tapping anywhere on screen (not using the little button) and has a fair few more options, for only a couple of dollars.

Its normal. This is a dual core processor and there's no cooling system.

Use widgetsoid app. It can pin any app, shortcut to notification area.

3. Is there any notes application that can read from my external sd card?

I use Inka file browser for view SD card files.

All the photos that you take from your phone camara saved on SD card DCIM folder.

2) I use widget soid as well. That said, if you long press on the homescreen, you can actually choose to add shortcuts/settings shortcuts/data usage. Goes straight to where you can on/off data. Long press power button also gives you a toggle.

3) Any file browser should be able to view your external microSD. Even MyFiles can so not sure what you looking for exactly.

4) If you go to the camera app, tap on menu and look at the settings. There is a place for you to select storage location. External microSD is an option.

Cheers

Thanks for the tips. worked well.

For the notes; I had copied all my Nokia notes into the external memory card. Now I want to link that to a notes application and make sure that I can edit and read the existing notes as well. Currently I have Memo in my phone. I want to use Memo to read all my old notes as well.

Btw, the battery is oozing charge. I did my usual activities on the phone, and the battery level is already 30% at 12:09 PM, whereas my Nokia N9 used to be at 77% and E7 at 80% by this time and usage.

Any idea on how the battery life can be bettered?

I suggest you to download only limited and secure apps, don't flood your device with apps,
do not activate multiple email ids, some times phone keeps sync them and phones get hot and battery gets drain.
go to your storage settings for change of data storage path.

I shall list out the apps I've downloaded

1) Facebook
2) Twitter
3) Linked in
4) Skype
5) foursquare
6) Temple Run
7) Phandroid
8) Memo
9) NDTV
10) TOI
11) CNN
12) HSBC fast balance

All these; except Temple run; are apps which I have on my Nokia E7 as well. In the Nokia; they are set to sync but not on the S2

Only my gmail has been configured and that too is not set to sync.

Now I've kept the phone for recharging. Time 13:48 BST.

And the phone gets really hot even on calls to the extent that I feel it might burn my ear :D

The best way I've found to increase battery life is by turning off sync (or adjusting sync settings), and disabling wifi and sometimes (if battery very low) the 3g as well. The wifi makes a fairly big difference... The auto adjust screen brightness is handy too (you can access it in the same menu I mentioned above which you can enable/disable the 3g, wifi etc on)... Oh and the bluetooth!

I've never noticed much difference with apps, unless they're not paid and they spam and such... The 3500mah batteries are popular but they make your phone chunky (I have one just for travelling, works very well and only cost me $15)

I shall list out the apps I've downloaded

1) Facebook Don't have it but hear can cause problems. Try only manual sync?
2) Twitter Same as facebook
3) Linked in
4) Skype Try not to be connected. Definitely drains battery if you are
5) foursquare
6) Temple Run
7) Phandroid
8) Memo
9) NDTV
10) TOI
11) CNN
12) HSBC fast balance

Try getting better battery stats from google play store or XDA forums. Check for wakelogs and try identifying possible rogue apps/processes.
Disabling 3G would do wonders for the battery.

Oh... lots of threads on batteries in the forum. Do a little search.
