That's an interesting question as Google is selling at a near loss (for the 8GB anyway) and surely a loss when you factor in the Play credit. I don't know how the brick and mortars will make any money unless they have accessories, but seeing how there is very little so far that is a stretch.

I read somewhere (I'd post a link but of the thousands of blog posts and threads I've read about the N7 I'd never find it again) that the components for the N7 cost about $185 ($195 for 16GB) and that doesn't include assembly, packaging, logistics, marketing, and Play credit.

I could be way off, just piecing different things I've read together.
 
Sounds about right, I can't see stores jacking up prices though because someone will just order online for cheaper. Google is only going to make money based on the fact that they give people $25 to spend, so they are hoping after that runs out users will continue to buy things from the google play store, me being included in that. It's a heck of a plan seeing as I do not subscribe to services such as netflix for movies, and I currently use google music to hold some of my songs.

At the same time it also makes me wonder in the long run if it would be cheaper to get a service like netflix or spotify premium for my music and movie needs.

Any thoughts on this stuff, I haven't given much thought to other services vs, how much I pay for movie rentals on the play store/redbox.
 
I got a 3 month Netflix gift certificate in December and signed up. I've only watched a few movies in that time (a dozen or so) but my son uses it all the time. He's 5 (well next week) and controls it through his Wii, our Blueray player, and on his D2 (which is gone, but he is getting his own N7 to replace it). From that aspect it is worth every penny of the $7.99 as any parent sitting in a doctors waiting room with a sick child will surely understand.

They may be able to, remember that guy that paid over $1,000 for the N7 on ebay right after IO. I'm sure some folks would pay an extra $25 for the convenience of buying in a store. Especially if they don't have access to a credit/debit card to buy from the play store.

We have nextflix and signed up for a 3 month hulu+ free trial
 
I can't order one from Play Store because I'm in Cambodia. But it looks like by the time I get back to the US next week it will be at Staples and I might be able to walk in and pick one up before they start delivering from Google! The only downside is I'll have to pay sales tax ($25).

We are all paying sales tax ourselves. Just think that you are getting the $25 back on play credit (which you should burn up before you head back to Cambodia) and at least you aren't paying UK tax as I heard that was 20%. You said somewhere you are bouncing around a bit (S3 thread maybe) so you should be able to pick a state with a lower sales tax as I don't know of many with 10% ($250 * 10%). Even here in Taxachusetts its only 6.25%.
 
I forgot that you all have to pay sales tax for online orders now. I'll be primarily in VA, MI and OH and stuff in between. Every one of those states is 5-6% :bawling:

For me in Mass, at a rate of 6.25% it was $28.00 for two devices (an 8GB and a 16GB) so you'll make out with the credit.

Glad your feeling better.;)

Like we already have Apple fanatics and Linux crackpots! :) I'm a Linux crackpot.

Still the same update on Google Wallet! I ordered on Google Play within an hour of the announcement. Hope Google understands that pre-order customers are the real fan base and would be really annoyed if Staples customers got the device before us.

The day Staples has them I envision finding a mob of people at the door when they open and only 50 units on the shelf. So SOME of us might get one before you. We'll see...

And hey, don't knock all of us Staples buyers. The only reason I didn't preorder is because I'm presently overseas and can't. Otherwise I'd be right there with you!
