just got the phone. and when I try to use swype it cant even get basic words right. Is there a way to fix this, or am I going to have to add every word I'm ever going to use in the dictionary?

I had the same problem when I first started (my last phone had a physical keyboard). Just give it some time to get used to. Reading the built-in help is advised.

I had the same problem, it was a mess.
TBH, using the Android keyboard held sideways/typing with thumbs is easier. I find running through the words faster is more helpful as typing slowly seems to yield more mistakes.

That keyboard also gives word suggestions as well.

it turns out my phone was set on spanish mode, so I switched it back to english and that fixed the problem
Indeed this is an actual problem imo. That button is right there and it should not be. I mean really? How often are people switching back and forth between English and Spanish such that that setting could not be in a menu rather than on the actual keyboard.

With my big fingers I've hit it a number of times by mistake. However I will say that with practice I have gotten better. Even with the fact that I have disabled screen rotation so I'm always using the smaller version of the keyboard.
